Ive recently bought a new mk1 bootlid but it hasn't got enough curve in it.

Does anyone know a good way to curve it without creasing it or damaging the outer skin?

It needs the centre at the top (by boot lock) pulling out by about 10mm. *oh well*

Cheers
Matt

Could you make a jig to bend it using an old boot, get the old boot weld braces all behind it so it's got some rigidity, then place the new one on it with some weights in each corner and see if it bends gradually over time. It's all I can think of, don't know if heat would help or just cause damage on a large panel.

I come across this before, I laid it on the ground with a chunk of wood under the lock area of the frame then I leaned on the two top corners to give it a bit more shape. Be careful placing the wood though or you'll crush the frame

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

It's starting to look like Heritage panels are only good for using the correct gauge of steel. The shapes of the panels seem to be all over the show. Certainly not what you would expect from production tooling.

I found this with some of the smaller closing panels. Also the sidelight holes in my clubman front panels/wings didn't line up properly...

Cheers for the reply lads, I'll give Pauls idea a go!

Heritage panels are shite, my inner wing I received this week is terrible! ive had to use a scissor jack on it to get it to sit in the right place. It also has a vertical swage line down it, and the inner wing I received a few months back didn't! *oh well*

I think there are more than just the one type of the same panel on most of the Mini panels to accomodate the difference in actual ages of cars. The swage on the inner wing, if its the one I am thinking about, is a latter panel, the earlier ones never used to have this. I think some suppliers don't seem too concerned with this and as far as they are concerned, an inner wing is an inner wing, or, it was just what was available at the time, or it could be that they are ignorant of the minor differencies in panels, that the proper restoration requires.

If there panels are like that tho and not quite right of late. Does that not make you wonder about the shells?

I think it quite widely accepted that even Heritage stuff is not as good as genuine.
The tooling is probably the same as Rover etc used - ie not refurbished etc so well worn and heading out of tolerance.
And I'll bet the steel is of different spec.

New heritage shells are not that good out of the box - I believe they need a bit of work to make them good. But then so did the shells on the line, just they employed a man to make them right!

Apparently the left hand inner wings are made to the later van spec where as the right hand wings are made to the earlier original spec *oh well*...Looks like the BFH will be coming out again!

I think ive sorted it now. I managed to curve it a bit more, and after comparing the hinge holes to my genuine boot, it turns out they were in the wrong place! *oh well*
