What power can you safely run through a helical box? Let's say it's fitted with sc drops and a four pin diff...

My thoughts are helical are stronger due to the total contact surface area of the gears? I might be talking out of my arse here and have that completely wrong! But isn't the sccr just for less train loss?

Thanks in advance

no no no no, you need more boost! you can never ever come on here and say I have enough boost, that's just silly.

A few on here have proved the helical box is OK with good power, that is if it is in good condition, an old shagged one will not last long. As you say the helical gears are stronger in the gear teeth themselves due to greater area in the tooth root, HOWEVER, the helical tooth form does inherently create side loading on the gearbox casing, which can start to be a problem with big torque.

Well it seems helical boxes can take 140hp, but for how long depends on abuse history, condition of bearings, and treatment really. After all most components have already completed one lifecycle in their original engine.

Roberts using helical drops at over 200bhp, so assuming bearings are in good condition then they may hold out, but others have trashed them at 120bhp. Turbo harry has come up with a very nice way of oil pressure feeding them.

As long as everythings put together properly then that it seems is the key to keeping it all together.

The metro van ran 150bhp without destroying the helical box over a few thousand miles. It had a 4 pin diff and s/c drops. I believe it had been refurb'd relativly recently, but that wasn't done by us so can't say for sure.

Wintersurfer is putting 150 nanas through an old GT box with a cross pin and SC drops. It's holding up fine after 1000 miles.

In the 13's at last!.. Just

I'm aiming for 200bhp so a rebuilt box is defiantly on the cards for sure.

Tom - I see your point there, I Didn't think about the side loading aspect at all.

It's £300 for a standard box rebuilt with central oil pick up from guessworks, plus the drops plus the diff I think it comes in at just over £700 delivered, but the sccr one is over the £1k mark. I suppose I'd be better of just getting a sccr one and buying once not twice...

helical drops will outlast the gearset, and likely the diff.

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

You have to take materials into account te sc gearset may be a better grade or better treated which then makes up for less surface area.

With the exception of a destroyed input shaft bearing, all was well.
