Hi All

I've been looking through the forums here for a while on this subject and looking for a little help.

I've picked up my new turbo mini (metro engine) but want to fit an intercooler ASAP and get it tuned with a little more boost. I'm really looking for advice on which intercooler fits the mini well and any suggestions from personal experience.

If you are feeling generous, I'd also like advice on a boost level that is fairly safe to run with the Metro engine (I'm using the car fairly regularly). FYI, the engine has already been prepared to handle more boost but I don't want to go crazy to start (looking for about 120-130bhp)

FYI - I've attached a picture of the engine bay (if that helps)

Boost levels depend on the compression ratio of your engine, standard turbo engines have a cr of 9.4:1, which is safe for around 8psi is fueling and timing are spot on and with a good intercooler.

I ran 10psi at std compression, but my fueling and timing were spot on and I was running super unleaded and a cosworth 2wd intercooler

I would reccomend the cosworth intercooler, they fit nicely under a roudnose, you just have to turn the right hand end cap 90degrees sop the pipe take off faces upwards, and needs cutting down and the silicone hose trimming down aswell, have a search and you ll see what I mean, you ll also need to mod your plenum chamber too, giallofly mods plenums, or nic does nice stainless items

You can run more than that on standard CR, 12psi no worries.

The series 2 Escort RS turbo IC is a common one to fit, but there's lots of others.

what has been done to prep it for higher boost? as said, the compression ratio will dictate to an extent safe boost.

As for intercoolers, the 4x4 cossie one seems popular

This is pretty much the extent of the engine mods, is there anything else I need to consider apart from an intercooler to raise the boost a little:

* Metro Turbo engine - Fully Rebuilt
* Block Bored and Honed to 1293CC
* Chambers on Cylinder head opened up to allow higher boost pressures
* Ported Head to allow better inlet and exhaust flow
* Standard Timing gear, Oil pump and Cam
* Ultra light alloy flywheel to allow engine to rev up faster
* New genuine Turbo Clutch at time of rebuild
* Fully Rebuilt Gearbox by Guess Works gear box specialists
* Rebuilt Garrett T3 Turbo at time of rebuild
* Modified Plenum chamber to accept dump Valve
* Bailey Piston Dump Valve
* Large Oil Cooler
* Large Electric fan on Radiator as well as standard Fan
* Inner Wings removed to improve Cooling and Airflow
* Cone filter
* Play Mini full Stainless Steel exhaust system

Sounds like its already had some headwork, see if you can find out the cr, or who did the head etc. The card been for sale on here I remember it :)

I run a s2 rs turbo intercooler, nice little compact unit.

If in doubt... flat out! The words of a true legend

As said above it's really difficult to say unless you know the compression ratio; you need the cc of the head chambers, the cc of the piston dish, if the block has been decked, the land cc and the gasket cc to be accurate. Without that it's purely guesswork. You can always fit the intercooler and run it and see what happens but you risk a meltdown.

Thanks guys - I'll prob look for an RS Turbo intercooler.

Anyone got any photos of the install? I'd really like to see how you've set it up. would be really useful.

Any ideas who is best to supply the pipes etc - what I will need?

Thanks again for your help

Do you mind sending through a picture of the engine bay and how you have set it up...

Thanks

Here's AlexB's car with a 2wd cossie intercooler fitted, its popular as it fits behind the bonnet really nicely.
