Am I at risk running a standard NA 1275 engine with a turbo? I am only intending to run 3-4psi until i can afford to build a low compression monster. Also would fitting an intercooler help or hinder my fragile little 1275 with its annoying high compression?
Cheers folkes

If you can resist turning the boost up and keep your timing and mixture in check 4psi will be ok as long as your compression isn't something like 12:1

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

what about the intercooler? also what are 1275cc engines from standard, aren't they about 11:1???

Intercooler would be a good idea, keep the boost low and fueling and timing good then you shold be ok, I would probably use some higher octane fuel too, tesco do a good 99 octane *happy*

But it only lasts about 15minutes. I put some in van left it a week and it ran like crap till i filled it up with fresh.

What makes you think its actually good? other than it says it's 99 octane on the pump.

If you have an expensive engine, or you aare pushing the boundaries of a standard engine in the manor suggested, Shell V power is the only fuel that should be used, not just because its 99 or 100 octane

yes IMO that boost and intercooler and tuned up correctly, it will be fine.

A fuels octane is a measurement of the ability to resist detonation, which occours when the fuel explodes rather than burning in a controlled manner.

What makes you say shell v power is any better than any other higher octane fuel? Do you have any hard evidence? Or just that shell are a big company so must be good?

There is a Job I frequent. Shell Technology Center, where they run tests on different fuels and blends. The engine testing center has 16 dyno cells running various tests on various fuels, not just their own. I know the guys there pretty well. Shell gaurantee their 99 octane fuel to be 99 octane at the pump, when you put it in your car. Shell use dedicated tankers for all their fuels, one for VP one for unleaded, one for VP diesel and one for diesel. Tesco on the other hand use a tanker for petrol and a tanker for diesel. Tesco 99 is likely to be 1 or even 2 points down from advertised due to this fact as well as the deterioration by aging. Shell formulate their V Power so that is 100 octane so that by the time it reaches the pump, it is 99 octane, has strong anti aging addatives, uper cylinder lubricants and an excellent detergent package, which is why you pay that bit more than you would with tesco 99. Itys not just a price hike because its Shell.

You may look at this as a biased view because I happen to know a few of the guys at Shell, but untill you have regularly used shell V power and then stripped the engine and looked at the combustion chambers, you will never understand. There is more to V power than just its octane rating!!

I don't know much about shell as there are no filling stations near me. But I run one of those cheap clear filters on my engine. I used BP all last summer and the filter inside stayed yellow, I came back to uni and used sainsburys fuel twice and now the filter is brown.

I've also read a few reports on the stuff they find in the supermarket fuel, including small leaves and even some sand in places. Only use name brand stuff now

Turbo parts collector at the moment, almost ready.

I have to say I have had some really bad super from Tesco before, the car knocked like a bastard on it until I threw two bottles of booster in.

In comparison I filled the 205 up with Shell V Power before Xmas (I haven't used it much over the winter) and yet when I took it out yesterday it was happy on full attack with no knock. (3 month old fuel)

with regards to fuel, iv always led to believe the super market is poor quality fuel and always shell, bp or esso

Thanks to Sprocket, thats good info. Suppose the least you can do when running a performance engine is to make sure the fuel your using is good.

Well i might try something extra special in a few years, if we're talking fuel then LPG has an octane rating of 114.. Spent many years working with propane, just like hank hill

Doesnt LPG have a habbit of burning out valves if not properly set up? Not having the same lubrication properties as normal fuels.

On another note of poor fuel i was working on a mower that hadnt been used for over 6 months and once started ran like a bag o crap, once fresh stuff was put in it ran great. And thats just a crappy single cylinder mower.

I've always used shell in all my cars, mostly for convenience as there's 2 shell stations in thrapston alone, but I've always used good fuels where I can since my mums car got a problem using tesco fuel and had to have the fuel system cleaned out.
