On my drive in this morning i heard on the radio that the government are proposing to make you insure a car even if it isn't on the road. Starting with a £100 fine and then if still no insurance they will remove your car. Has anyone else heard this and what does it mean for all the project cars scattered across the country?

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Rotherham, South Yorkshire

Just means that if it's taxed it has to be insured.

If your car is off the road, just sorn it and you'll be fine

I don't see why it would be a pain for anyone. If you have a car off the road, SORN it, simple.

If you have a long term project that has been off the road so long that it has never required to be SORN'd then there is no requirement for you to do anything.

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

If its not an issue, why would you worry about it. If you worry about it its an issue

On the SORN front, if you have had the vehicle off the road and the latest tax expired before 1st jan 1998, then SORN does not apply. If tax expired after thios date, it needs to be SORN'd

If its taxed, it needs insurance, whether on or off the road.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Im glad this has come up, because if it had not i'd probably be in for a fine right now.

I have just bought a defender, but want to sell the crx before putting the insurance across to save the hassle of two policies. I have now got to fuck about sorning the land rover. Its all just hassle that catches people out. Bastards the lot of them!

The blurb when it was announced was along the lines of the nice insurers helping the government to get the uninsured drivers off the road and making it easy for everyone by automatically dipping your bank account to renew your premium. Yeah Right!

What if you have a car you only drive occasionally? You could have got temporary cover for a couple of days in a month - not any more. Say you drive on the 7th so you get it taxed, only now you have to surrender your tax only to pay again for that month if you decide to drive again before the 31st. Not to mention all the buggering about when all it needed before was a phone call to your broker.

How often does that happen though? I don't think that it really is going to affect many people. I would say that 99.99% of drivers will not even notice, let alone care.

I agree. I have a car I only use in the summer. But the insurance for a year is £130 (as limited mileage policies are cheap). I bet temporary cover for a few days at a time would cost more, and then your car is not insured sat in your garage.

I can't think why anyone would use temporary cover other than to insure themselves on other peoples cars.

IMO the more that is done to make it harder for people to get away without insurance the better. This change will statistically have zero affect on anyone other than those trying to beat the system.
