I used diesel to clean my gearset and gearbox out with. Have to say its just as good as any other parts cleaner/paraffin.

10 minutes in a hot spin washer at the machinists I uses and its CLEAN Diesel is a bit smelly for a parts washer would you not think? What do you clean the deisel off with? Agreed, its not 100% clean but better than it was, end of the day I wont see it so didn't want it too shiney. It is smelly but so is paraffin and some other cleaners. |

Diesel does a good job of cleaning, but leaves an oily residue, and STINKS!

i use a combination of parafin and diesel, i'd rather smell the parafin over the diesel anyday. I run the parafin through a paper filter before use, i tend to find it slightly gritty but suppose it depends where you get it. 133.5 bhp 123 lb torque 116mph @6640rpm 9.5psi

My parts washer gets topped up with all sorts. It's always 1/2 empty when I need it, so I chuck in whatever is about. Diesel, paraffin, petrol, gunk...

our parts cleaner fluid is water based i think I know any degreasers Ive used before are water soluble. Which makes parts very easy to clean in the washer, then simply rinse off afterwards. 9.85 @ 145mph

I reckon good old parafin, kerosene, diesel etc is great for really dirty, ground in crap like suspension parts and bits covered in road dirt. The water based cleaners are good in a clean parts washer only, things like engine, gearbox etc. 133.5 bhp 123 lb torque 116mph @6640rpm 9.5psi

Out of interest....what about fire risk ? Is normal parts cleaner as flammable ? our parts washer has a kinda wax-stat in the lid so if it catches fire the lid closes and starves it of oxygen, but saying that we fill it with water based stuff! i guess some parts washer fluids are very flammable. turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

I would say if you have 10 litres of the stuff just use it.You can always get rid of the film with a quick splash of degreaser and the hose.
