My neighbour has a 998 Auto which ive been working on, he is having intermittent running issues where the car conks out but will re-start straight away or he can leave it for a while to coast and it wll pickup again

It sounds like fuel starvation as it done it to me at high revs on the M32 and coming of the throttle and letting it coast it picked up again, ive put an in-line filter in as ive already stripped and cleaned the carb and put a new std needle in as the old one was fubard. Everything has been changed including all the ignition parts.

Is there anything on an auto that it could be? ive checked the float and it seems to be adjusted fine and the needle is clean and not worn.

Cheers

Auto-specific bit - Check the ignition inhibitor is setup correctly and the wires/connectors for it are in good clean condition.

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.

The only auto electrical bit is the "wont allow it to start" contact on the gear selector, but im not sure that it would make the car stop running?

could be an air leak. could be shite in the carb - mine had it and did the same. could also be crap in the bottom of the tank.

what is the fuel pump like? i had to change mine on the clubman as it was doing really strange things, it pulled a vacuum but wouldn't push fuel.

good luck...

alex, whats the ignition inhibitor? will check the book of lies to see if its in there, Al it turns over although a bit slowly for my liking so was going to change the oil, any suggestions on that as 20W50 is too thick for autos?
I richened the mixture up last night and it seemed to improve the pickup on acceleration and top end revs seemed cleaner, i reckon it just needs a good tune up, but I suggested to him to do so after we had fitted an LCB and Maniflow system to it.
