How important are the sodium cooled exhaust valves? I've read that most people use stainless valves.

What happens if you leave the standard ones in? In what way do they fail?

Turbo parts collector at the moment, almost ready.

I guess the only way to find out, is to find someone with a failed valve.

Ive never seen any metro turbo valves fail ?

Although for replacements, inconel would be more sensible than stainless.

We've been running standard valve guides (isn't it the guides that are sodium filled??) on the van at about 150 bananas, admittedly they where all fooked but they didn't break. We're having the head refurbed with normal valve guides and stainless valves. Hoping for more power too *smiley*

The standard valves are two pieces, with the head friction welded to the stem. I would think it would be high RPM which could cause the valve to fatigue, causing the head to come off rather than anything else in particular.
Most folks just replace them with the stainless ones when a new set is required, these are more than up to the job.

No, it's the stems of the valves, hence the larger diameter. The guides are just standard iron. :)

Right, because I've got a standard head laying around, well a couple.

That's sorted then, I'll open up the chambers and slap it on. If it fails, it's just an excuse to build a proper engine *happy*

Incidently the only time I've seen valve failure is on a very high revving N/A engine.

CHeers guys!

If you use the std valves you run more risk or burning one out, but i would think it would take a few years.
