Been thinking that I've been an idiot and totally incompetent about this for a while now. When I rebuilt my motor about a year ago to put the 7 port head on, I changed to a 276 cam (got rid of the scatter) and upgraded to a Mini-Spares belt drive setup. Well, I've felt like I've never been able to get the cam timing right on this thing. Tried for a day when built, was finally half way happy, ran the motor a bit, re-tried timing, was half way happy again. I was never able to seem to adjust the timing, even though I have the dowel adjustable setup. Pulled the motor this week to do the coilover conversion and fuel injection and figured I really needed to figure out this cam timing. I've had crap bottom end power since the 7 port install, but ok on the top. In any case, I re-checked the cam timing before I changed anything and I was at 97 degrees....should be 106 on my cam...*oh well* Let's see if anyone can spot why......

It would help to be able to adjust the cam timing if the dowel holes were actually offset by a few degrees each hole.....not perfectly matched to the drive belt gear! *surprised* Got a new gear on the way and hopefully an ass load of bottom end power with it!

The vernier adjustable one is much better. Dowels are always shit

I seriously doubt it!

Mine are all nicely offset, but it was still a total pain to get the timing setup.

Why Paul? I've always found the Minispares' dowel version great. Weight?

Loose fitting dowels, and pain in the arse to do

I seriously doubt it!

Quality of the unit as for fit and finish are very good...dowel fits tight and everything seals well....just a bit hard to adjust when there is no offsett in the holes!

I've always been a bit leary of the vernier style with just lock screws...maybe it's just me, but they seem a bit more fragile.

Yes, robert....definitely made this harder than it should be....*oh well* I hate it when I can't figure out something that should really be somewhat simple.

Fortunately this should really help my bottom end power that I was complaining about before with the 7 port swap...*happy*

YES...I do enjoy when I find a factual solution to a problem....I guess I just never considered a manufacturing error when trying to sort this out. I always used a chain drive before, so I never really considered how much or little offset there should really be with the dowel holes. Live and learn...and share so others don't go crazy too....:)

What if you were to rotate the outer section 180 degrees in relation to the center?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

They still all line up 100% perfect....on my bodge style adjustment, I did move the outer gear from the belt and was able to get to 103 degrees....glad I kept on and didn't just settle!

Just a follow up...got a replacement inner gear from my supplier here in the U.S. Said they talked to the MiniSpares folks and it was admitted that there were a few kits supplied with the inner and outer cam gear that were milled identically to each other. New part is installed and timed to 106! Looking forward to LOTS more low end power now as I was about 9 degrees off on cam timing.

In my defense, I installed the new cam, 7 port head, and belt drive all at the same time....top end was as strong and slightly better than the worked 5 port w/weber 45 and low end sucked! Looking forward to the next phase of the project and getting the fuel injection installed soon!
