hi all, i need my car for next week as im working in away in rotherham, i am in need of a new oil filter housing as mine broke, so i bought one of phillc, which arrived today, but in the meantime i borrowed one of a 998 a+ engine, but the threads for the oil feed pipe were too small, now i got the filter housing today, and again, the threads were too small? i am wondering if there are more than one different sizes for a+ engines? heres a very bad picture, was took on my phone, but you get the idea.

is there an adapter i need/can buy, or has anyone got an oil feed pipe the correct size or a filter housing the correct size?

cheers.

There are various differnt threads on the filter heads.

Working away in Rotherham - it's 20 minutes from Donny lol.

I've got a few heads with the pipes throwing round if you want one.

Does the block have a banjo bolt on the oil pipe?

as far as I am aware there are only two 'types' of oil pipe. A and early A+ with the banjo bolt, or late A+ (~92 onwards) with a rubber gland and backing nut.

Hazarding a guess, you need a late A+ filter housing with the rubber gland and backing nut type oil pipe?

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I had this whole debarcle with my first engine, it seems all spi 1992> 12a engines had 11/16 unf threads in both the filter head and block(approx 17mm iirc)-they also had the olive sealed oil pipe to fit these, all earlier a+ engines are 5/8unf in the block and 1/4 npt in the filter head. You need filter head part number LPX10026 which I found to be very very elusive. To use the 1/4 npt head you could use the after market hose which goes from 11/16 block to 1/4 npt head which is MOC1019 as mini spares, out of stock currently though. You could try TAM2106BRAIDED-chuck the 5/8 block adaptor and I have a spare 11/16 adaptor and washer to suit these hoses you could have for postage.

It took me ages to get the correct filter head, then the first engine expired so I had to go back to a 5/8 block! I found it cheaper to buy the goodridge bits and adaptors and make me own pipe in the end-covered for all combinations with the right adaptors.

Taken from ms website:

To replace the troublesome block to filter head oil transfer pipe which has seals and olive fixings fitted to the 1992 on later LPX10026 spin on filter head with 11/16"union.But, as the original all metal pipe for A series engines are obsolete this is the only pipe available to fit the earlier spin on filter head TAM2097 to 1992on cars. Another benefit owing to the larger feed holes and extra oil flow is extra BHP can be gained when checked on a dyno but also decreases the need for fitting an oil cooler under most circumstances. Pre 1992 engines have 5/8" block union and 1/4" npt thread for the filter head 12A engines from 1992 on have 11/16"UNF block and filter head.

Easiest option is to try and find the correct filter head but I struggled, fingers crossed ap has one.

Hope that helps

Oli

Oli is it only spi engines with the bigger thread housing? Because I don't have an spi block I have a metro turbo, also I have an aftermarket braided hose on there? Not sure of thread size, but you sound about right there bret?

Oli, if I pay for RM special delivery, should be here before 1pm next day, that's only if you could get it in the post today? Could really do with it by the weekend

Well as far as I am aware all 92 onwards are the larger 11/16 thread in the block, as you have a metty turbo engine you will have 5/8 unf in the block. My adaptor was only going to be any use if you were going to buy an aftermarket oil pipe and you engine was spi which it isnt.
As you have an aftermarket hose anyhow the block end of the oil pipe must be connected and the adaptor I have is useless so forget about that bit.

If you want to fit a 'normal' filter head you need to adapt your oil pipe to 1/4 npt, dont take it as set in stone but most aftermarket hoses have jic6 fittings on the end, meaning you would need a jic6-1/4npt adaptor, or whatever your hose is to 1/4 npt adaptor.

At this short notice I would suggest the easiest option would be to take the oil pipe and the filter head to a local hydraulics specialist armed with the thread sizes and you may find they will be able to help.

Cheers

oli

Just had a look through me boxes of bits in garage and voila! think this may be what you are after provided your flexible hose has a jic6 end on it, if it does the internal threads will be 9/16" or a shade over 14mm.

may be a bit late, but if you want it let me know tonight, am away for the weekend ang going at lunchtime tommorow but could post in the morning, if not no worries.

cheers
