First do a lot of looking around at whats available at your budget.

For light work some of the cheap and cheerful items coming from the East will do, but if, as you probably will, try to do more ambitious stuff then a used old style lathe is best.

Look for something with a centre height of at least 5" and a bed length of 24"
Make sure you get at least a three jaw chuck and some cutting tools with it, to start you off.

Power feed and cross feed are nice, but not essential. If you can get one with screw cutting facilities you will find it useful eventually.

The trouble with a decent size lathe is its weight -getting it home may cost you !

I have been keeping and eye out for one as well recently and stumbled across a few myfords on gumtree at reasonable prices (cheaper than ebay anyway)

Somewhere around Swindon

ive just bought a myford ml7 nice condition with no wear or abuse still going to restore it though

look for a myford or boxford both can be had in single phase and fairly cheap, if i had had the space i would have gone for a colchester student or chipmaster budget allowing

I know of a 1938 Myford ML4 lathe for sale in Kent it has been restored and has its own cast iron stand the guy wants £195 for it, but i am unsure if this is a good one to go with ? it would cost me 50 quid to get it palletted to me next day delivery.

anyone used the ML4 before ?
