I got my car as a non-running project, which has turned out to be a big mistake. Ever since I got the engine running, it's been popping and banging etc. Anyway, I notced water leaking from betwixt head and block so took the head off today. I now suspect I don't have a turbo head as the valve stems are the same size. Mysteriously the head nuts and manifold nuts weren't that tight. Here are some pics.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The fact its not a turbo head will not make any difference anyway. what info do you have on the engine? check the numbers stamped on the piston crowns as the heads off to identify them as turbo pistons (hopefully)

If it was running like arse it could just be that the head was not torqued down properly losing cylinder pressure.

OK thanks. I've checked the engine number with one of the guides listed on here and it is a turbo engine. How do I identify the pistons? They appear to have an 'A' stamped on them in the centre.

Pistons should be numbered round the edge of the crown 20831 or 22357 if I remember correctly

Resident Cylinder Head Modifier

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

while you have the head off have you considerd having the head overhauled or maybe modded ? ie fully ported with race valves, combustion chambers etc ..etc with 28ccs in them so you can run more boost in the future maybe?

Yes

However, my main priority is getting the thing MOT'd at the moment. Also I won't know if the rest of the engine / transmission is any good untill I've driven it properly. Doing up the head may form part of an overall engine rebuild.

It took less than an hour to get the head off (compared with 8 hours to do the head gasket on a 16v micra) so it isn't a big deal.
