Southern Norway.

G'day all, i'm having some problems with my golf, and thought i'll ask here, as you guys seems to know a bit about engines! :)

It starts perfectly, and goes like its new ( almost) but after i've driven it for a while, and its gotten hot, and park it, it just doesn't want to start again.

When i crank it, it ignites, but sounds and feels like its going on shit, it wobbles and rattles and makes noises that makes me wonder if its going to blow up.
When this happens the engine is running at around 300-400 rpm, which is quite low. But if i give it a little throttle it just dies.

If i try to spray a little start gas in the airfilter, it will rev up to around 2000 rpm, and then just die.

But if i just let it cool off for some hours (5-6 hours), and try to start, it goes like nothing ever happened, and i can drive it normally.

It doesn't always happen though, only 2 out of 5 times or so.

Hopefully you understand what i'm trying to say here^^

I've had the problem for a about a year now, but now it seems to getting worse.

Its a Golf 4, 1,6 gasoline. currently with 210k on its clock, i've had it since 100k

Coolant temp sensor?

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Hmm, i was actually thinking of the same, it seems like my local VW workshop is unable to figure it out, nothing shows up on the vag com. if its not the coolant temp, what else could it be?

It was only a guess. Don't take it as gospel.

I use to work for VW as a mechanic and the 2 most common faults are coolant temp sensor (green 4 pin that is hald in with a plastic clip) and the MAF.

The MAF's were a big problem and the newer ones produced are much better and have a lot of mesh surrounding them to protect them.

Take off the MAF and give it a clean and see if it's a new one.

The temp sensor maybe worth replacing as it only costs between £10 and £20. Get a new rubber seal whilst you're at it.

hey,

i know this may sound dumb but when was the ht leads last changed??

just we had this sort of problem with the merc, and the garage couldnt solve it, took it to an ex merc employee and he found the that the core was breaking down inside the leads so when the car got hot them symptoms occured!!

maybe worth a look!!

Good point Martin.

I had this on a motorbike years ago when the plug was getting hot, it was breaking down.

Maybe worth looking at changing those or seeing if you can swap them with someone else.

Cars, they are never simple!

Does it have a crank sensor? They often fail on VWs.

Yes i think it has.

My engine code is AEH/AKL/APF haime :)

I think the waterpump and cambelt was done at 180k, as i blew a head gasket :)

At least you got one of the good engines, have you had it code read?

I had it code read today by an mechanic, and he couldn't find any errors on it.

In fact, he never encountered any problems like this, lol piece of shit car..

if there are no codes, and truely no signs of the problem on live data (requires someone who knows there onions, not just some monkey with a scanner/vagcom) then the only thing that would cause this IMHO, is a fuel pump, fuel pump replay, fuel filter.. well, you get the idea :) fuel delivery issue.

Hmm, still having this problems, throttle body cleaned, spark plugs changed, ht leads changed. But problem still persists, i'm running out of money now, lol :)

Chief technician of the local VW workshop had a look and cleaned the throttle body, it still didn't help though =/
