Yes, I know the problems have been posted before but if anyone want's to see what the letter you will (eventually) get back if you try to be honest, here's the one I received. Their response took nearly five weeks. This is for the second project, just trying to get the paperwork ready in advance.....

This is interesting, I need to change one of my log books colour and engine capacity and wondered how much hassle it would be.

It all seems to depend on who is dealing with it at DVLA, although our (Club) DVLA contact had been assured that these sort of problems have been addressed satisfactorily. !

There seems to be one or more self obsessed little twats at DVLA who like to wield the little bit of power they think that they have. I don't think it is as complicated as that. It's jobs-worths with a tick box mentality, in my opinion. They work for system obsessed managers with no concept of the real world. about 1 year ago i went to preston to the DVLA office to change my engine size from 998cc to 1310cc... however i do not have an engine number to give them. so on my v5 it says "Unknown" and the cc says 1310... the guy behind the counter asked me how i know its 1310cc, i said i have had the engine bored to +40 and i have bigger pistons on a standard 1275 crank. he then said "ok" ... its funny really cause my mini is called a city 1000 |

It seems standard practise that no matter what you tell them, they come up with that response.

Ive often wondered if you do crash are they really going to take the head off and actually check the capacity? Espically if the engines the same colour as standard and has the correct engine number. |

I think the easy solution is to find a decent AA / RAC employ and have a chat with them, invite them round, show them what you're car, have a few brews and get them to write an inspection report. Isambard Kingdom Brunel said:

To be honest I think it is even easier than that. I type up a letter on headed paper (easy to make on a PC) from TF Autos to say that I have inspected the car in my role as technical officer of the turbominis owners club and am happy to certify that blah blah blah blah blah.....etc etc

As long as you sound/look like an official, you are according to the DVLA. They are mostly useless and need to be treated as such. |

a recipt for the rebore that states the size and engine number (make one up if it doesnt have one) should be all that is required.

You can do what you like with an historic vehicle. They have just relaxed the rules so no silly letters needed if you change the engine.

Some interesting comments and suggestions. If it starts to become a major problem, Tom's idea sounds good. I'll see what affect my letter has first, it went yesterday (with the V5C included again so they can't ignore it).

why should anybody care about engine size? its only to give the DVLA road tax OR the insurance to up your premium for the sake of having a bigger engine? i dont see why they are soo big on needing all this evidence for making your engine bigger? |
