Hi hoping one of you can help, im really struggling with this one.

The storey is, i bought a GPS reciever for my laptop. Plugged it in, gave me blue screen of death, now crashes on the boot screen everytime i try start windows (pauses on something called xmasbus... then restarts)

Ive tried everything i know, and done things like taking one memory stick out at a time to see if it was a memory problem, but still the same problem.

I tried reinstalling XP overthe top, but it does the same screen when starting the instalation, and restarts.

I took it to the computer shop that i bought the GPS reciever from and told him to fix it. 3 days later he told me it was a motherboard problem as it wont even network boot. Im unconvinced though, unless the GPS reciever has fried the motherboard or something. He says its just coinsidence that it broke at the same time.

Its just gone out of warrenty. Its an advent 7026 cost me about ?1300 lol so i really want to fix it. I stripped it down last night and got it running on the bench and disconnected other cards like the wireless card incase it was them - but no change still wont boot.

Today i downloaded Hiren's Boot disk that i found on the net. It has loads of boot tools. With the file explorers i got access to the hard drive and all my work is still there. I cant lose this work its too important its all my college portfolio stuff and its not backed up anymore :(

I just wanted to know what i should do next. I found a tool called norton ghost that will run, and offers to back stuff up to 5-6DVD's. Would you try this next? I darnt try too many of the tools incase i wipe the hard drive.

Any advice really appreciated :)

ps the mini windows 3.1 loaded off the boot disk, that brings back memories lol!

use ghost to backup your drive first, this is pretty save. What is the error message on the blue screen?

Norton Ghost is pretty good. I would try that first to try and save your files.

After that I've no bloody idea, I'm shite with computers!

Sounds like a driver fault. Will it boot in Safe Mode?

No it wont boot in driver mode either. Wont reinstall windows, and when the blue screen comes on its only on for a quater of a second before restarting itself.

Ill buy some DVD's tomorow and back up with norton ghost. Anything else i can try though without it letting me reinstall windows? Could norton be stopping me do this?

it will be a driver fault i think, something conflicting with the GPS reciever i think?

Sounds like you'll only get it all sorted with a clean install of Windows *frown* You can also try and get your files back with a Linux boot cd, see here.
