Morning all,

I want to fit an air temperature gauge to the mini for intake temperatures, but I have a problem with the sender! The sender is 4mm x 20mm and the cable length is fixed at 550mm long.

Any idea's on mounting it safely to the pipework without risking a boost leak? Due to the length it will have to go near the turbo/plenum itself rather than the I/C, but i'm not sure how to fit it!

I have access to a Mill, Lathe and welder, but not an ali welder! My pipework is most likely going to be stainless and samco joiners as well.

Cheers

Do you have any further information on it ???

Air temperature sensors normally have an "open" sensor head to make them fast acting - look at any IAT sensor on any car that has fuel injection and you will see what I mean - that one looks like it is fully encased.

If so, the way that would normally be fitted is through a compression fitting, the kind meant for fitting thermoucouples. The compression fitting could either be a weld on stub at the other end but more likely a male threaded end so you could drill/tap one of your hose joiners.

Here is an example

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Compression-union-fi...=item3367166f11

But as you can see, the standard size for a thermocouple is 3mm, if your sensor really is 4mm, you may struggle to find anything suitable.

Try a search for 4mm compression fittings.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Thanks Rod, compression fittings didn't occur to me at all! It is 4mm, measured with vernier calipers so should be accurate enough to differentiate it between that and a 3mm one, which is now a bit of a pain

I don't have anymore information on it i'm afraid, I bought it as is really as I thought it wouldn't be a "bad thing" to have, and it wasn't that expensive! Looking at it though, it is fully encased, but for its purpose I don't think the fast acting would be vital.

Thanks again

A cheap digital pc temperature gauge may be an idea, i have one setup for when im ready for one, the things run off 5v so some soldering will be required when you fit a regulator to it, and the sender lead may have to be extended depending on where you put it, but they'll slip under a hose underneath a jubilee *wink*

Carlzilla, the paper I got with mine said to put it under a silicon hose, hanging into the air flow, but to be frank I didn't want to compromise putting anything loose into the air stream as the cyclical nature of the use may lead to it breaking off, which would end badly, hence me wanting a more permanent fitting.

The probe you got looks a little big to place under a hose to me, picture could be misleading. the probe on the end of the thing im on about is tiny, and shouldnt cause any bother
What the probe looks like on mine: http://www.thecoolingshop.com/product_info...Flat_23793.html

since seeing this thread i have bought 2 of these...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Digital-Thermometer-...c#ht_2925wt_957

They run on 12v (as you can see on the pic the voltage wires go into the RED and black on the 4 pin connector which is 12v (the yellow is 5v)

ive got mine for air intake before and after the intercooler to see if it is actually doing a good job :)

Dude, with molex yellow is 12v, red is 5v. Dont fry your hard earned! The 3 pin fan connectors have red as 12v though.
(mine was molex connectored)

Cheers, wow hmm i wonder why some things in the past never blew up *tongue* hehe right, i never knew they were 5v. i will have to get my 100 in 1 circuit kit out to make myself a voltage transformer :)

If youre feeling lazy you could buy one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/2a-positive-fixed-...ordercode=UJ54J, its what i used on mine. (5v is the top one youre after L78S05CV)

oh right, so that will convert from 0 to 35v to 5v?

Not quite - they regulate downwards and require a small overhead (about 1.2 - 1.8V) above the required 5V output to work.
So say 7V - 35V
Ideal for 5V electronics from a cars 12-14V supply.

They work from about 6.2v to 35v i think

No worries, though if you come across electricity generated from nothing, let me know *tongue*
