Anyone got a 0.006" diff shim hanging around?

Thanks Tom.

I've just done the trial fit with the ATB and just need a bit extra to take up the pre-load.

Paul,

I have a 6 thou one and quite a few thinner if you really want to be that accurate :)

I'll put it in the post tommorow (bank holiday so you won't see it untill Wednesday at best) but if you want a few thinner to play with email me tonight.

It's the thick ones I'm really short of - the cheap aftermarket sideplate gaskets are so much thicker than the original ones you need more thick shims to compensate....

Rod, that would be great.

I have a gap of 0.004" with both gaskets fitted plus the 0.020" and 0.010" shims that came off the box.

I was going to preload by 0.002".

I was thinking about this myself- what preload for the ATB, or just use STD figures.

Well the Haynes says 0.004" pre-load as standard, but that would mean using a 0.008" shim which is not available - I think.

Whoops, another grey moment.

I thought that I was using my metric feelers. Turns out that what I thought was 0.1mm was actually 0.010". Bugger, must get some better glasses.

So I need about 0.012" in shims. Two 0.006" would be best.

Tom,

The pre-load is on the carrier bearings only. That (small) load is transferred to the diff cage only so the type of diff is pretty irrelevant IMO as the diff cage is so much more rigid than the gearbox casing.

In one of the manuals I have read, there are two different types of carrier bearings, each requiring a different preload. They are different depending what is stamped on the outer race.

But, TBO, there is so much inconsistency in the way the gearbox/diff casings are machined - try measuring the diameters and widths where the bearings sit to see how accurate they were made - that any small amount of pre-load would be fine.

Just don't run with no preload as angular contact bearings don't like to "rattle".

I haven't got two 006 but I have a 010 and an 002

You'd better get some double Magoo glasses (like I use for soldering PCBs) :)

In my defence, the metric feelers are maked 0.10 and the imperial .010. Just the decimal point is different.

I went and checked because I suddenly thought "that feeler is a bit stiff for only 4 thou !".

Rod, a 0.010" and a 0.002" will be fine. Thanks.

Posted tonight.

I did have to walk past my local pub to get to the letterbox but I resisted the temptation :)

Maybe tomorrow lunchtime *happy*

Thanks Rod. I owe you (again).

Have a beer on me. Think of me battling with a transfer case, idler/nose bearings and oil drains whilst you are at it :)
