Evening all!

I am planning a BMW K head conversion (with turbo), and my dads friend has a complete K100 bike he is willing to give to me. I know the K100 is an 8 valve, and I wanted to originally go for a 16 valve k1100 or similar.
Question is, how big a difference is there on power between an 8v and 16v, any pro and cons between them?

Many thanks in advance, Adam

Not enough difference to warrant not using a free one I think.

I think the main reason for using the K heads is the number of ports as opposed to valves. I'm sure someone on here has a more detailed answer though.

imo having 8 ports in either head you tuse is a big advantage

as a rough idea, in std fettle on a mini block you can expect around 100 hp from the 8v head and about 120hp from the 16v head.

The cams on the 8v have little overlap which is good

Thanks for the input guys! I may just go with the 8v as I have it at my disposal.
The 16v seem pretty hard to come across, especially with all the injectors/fuel rail ect...

Am I right in saying that the K100 also has injector pockets in the head and not in the manifold?

More dump questions but would the 8v be better for low rpm torque?

Possibly.

If you want it to rev 16v is the way to go

LOL at Mike *hehe!*

The 8v cams are a bit racey for a turbo, maybe come on cam around 4k, all top end, but far from the end of the world.

If you build one of these engines and stick a turbo on it, build it fo about 8k rpm, that way taking advantage of what these engines are good at. Just look at JK's, 300hp+ at 8k. Its all about the revs, power then comes naturally *happy*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Might have a look around some scrap yards this weekend to see if I can find me a 16v, I take it I will be needing to change to bigger injectors if i'm looking for 150+ bhp? I don't really like the idea of the power band 4k+.

Could you change the cams?
