Hi all,

was talking to my mate today and he asked me when i was getting an engineers report done for my turbo mini for when the engine is in!
Do we need an engineers report for our turbominis? He seems to think one needs to be done whenever an engine that is different to the original is put in. *indifferent*

Cheers matt *smiley*

WooHoo Passed it's MOT!!!! One of the cars in The Portsmouth Mini Turbo Massive!!

As far as I am aware the only reason to require an engineers report is if requested by an insurance company.

This usually occurs when a car has been DRASTICALLY modified. In our case, the car still uses its original suspension, driveshafts, steering rack and column, engine mounting points, etc etc. In fact for arguments sake all that has really been added is the turbo charger as the engine and gearbox is the same configuration as it would have orignally been.

So I doubt you will need an engineers report.

But then again if you do its not too hard to get one, theoretically I could write you one as I have an official Mechanical Engineering qualification from a well known establishment, with the associated letters after my name that I have never used.

Ahhh ok lads cheers, I didnt think it would be needed cos as Tom said its not as if we are changing things dramatically.
My insurance company hasnt asked for anything like that so i guessed that if we did need one then they'd ask for it!

Well atleast now i know and can prove him wrong later lol.

Cheers Matt *smiley*

Any MOT tester or general garage grease monkey can provide an engineers report if they call themselves an 'engineer'...

That's another reason why 'engineering' in the UK is fucked up. Every washing machine repairman, alarm fitter, Diesel fitter, et-fucking-cetra can call themselves an engineer and get away with it.

Annoys the hell out of me. Fortunatelly i'm now in a country that uses the term properly.

Rant over!

Kind of - but would an MOT tester fail you if your bulkhead box was made out of alloy sheet and pop-riveted into place? Probably not... the 'engineers report' is meant to go through stuff to prove work has been completed to a certian level - eg, drums on a 1971 mini would pass an mot, even if there was a 16v vaux engine under the bonnnet...

ok just wasnt sure...i dont think an mot is worth out really as all its saying is the time the tester sees it the car was ok but you could leave the centre get halfway down street and something could break or go wrong...well thats wot garage near mine told me!lol

prove me wrong as always ladslol

Dont actually think there is any comeback on an mot really. I had a mini that failed an mot and took it to another garage for second opinion and they picked up more things lol!! Think every garage looks at things different, only my opinion tho!

The only two types of mini ive seen needing a engineer report for the DVLA was somone who converted to a soft top (chopped the roof off), and someone who put a VTec engine in place. Both passed but it was alot of messing about and waiting arround before having them road legal.

apparently in germany engineers are up with the status of a doctor, as they well should be, im only an assistant engineer at the mo and feel that engineering in the uk is very well advertised as such.
we do loads of school/career fairs just to try and get kids interested.

even if you do need a report, how many garages or so called engineers know more bout your car than yourself thats why its just a load of crap, for example i broke down on the m25 the other day called the aa out, and he didn know why it was backfiring etc etc i said it was the coil and the hose to the plenum he argued to the fuck that i was wrong anyway got home new coil and new hose runs sweet all day now!!

I'm with Dave on this, any old muppet can put an engineers hat on these days here. Most so called engineers i've met couldn't engineer their way out of a paper bag.
