It's not something I'm going to do but something I'm wondering about. I was wondering whether any cars or bikes had exhaust enhanced by the air speed from travelling. As an example, if the exhaust coming out of my a panel had an cleverly placed indent behind it with it being angled correctly could passing air cause a low pressured area which could suck the exhaust fumes out of the exhaust, and if it could would this have any performance benefits... Has anyone else ever wondered or looked into it?

I dont think you could get any benifit,

however I have been hearing about exhausts ducted into difusers to enhance airodynamics/downforce.

That must help Joe, especially on a naturally aspirated engine, sucking those spent fumes out as soon as the valves open?

My initial thought was that the exhaust flow would be to much, either there would be no effect or it would destroy the downforce effect,

...but it looks like exhausts do exit right at the point of most depression, so it could work, you might need to be going very fast though!

Looks like a good idea on things like f1 cars, but on a mini youre trying to apply aerodynamics to what is effectively a breezeblock in terms of cutting through the air. Ill stick with my rc40 *happy*

What F1 are currently doing is using the exhaust 'power' to improve downforce, rather than use aero to improve exhaust exit.

Put it this way, McLaren couldn't get it to work, so it's unlikely any of us will find any benefit.

Mini's may noy be beautifully curved and slippery, but their frontal area is so small that they're not as bad as you'd think. But there is still plenty that can be done.

A tray under the rear subframe is the simplest and most effective for little layout.

Surely it is much easier just to put a bigger exhaust on.

As Wil points out, in F1 they use the exhaust to create downforce and have done for years. But they have 600bhp+ of exhaust to play with we only have (ignoring John K and Matt W and others) 150 to 200 if you are lucky.

The way I see it its is the prospect of a central exhaust as fitted on Minis since god knows when?

I red about it on ecomodders where some clever folks talk and experiment about aerodynamics (with a civic sporting .17 Cd) and they say the idea is to fill as much of the void left by the advancing vehicle with exhaust gases so exhaust aiming at the centre of the back of the car

an unmodified (only position change) best position for exhaust outlet is the center due to the area of low air pressure, have you guys read racecar engineering?

Confessed addiction to everything mini
