ok so the best solution would be to take your number plates off, but this is no good on the roads.

so today i made these up, well i designed the template and put the vinyl on after it was cut by someone else.

they are made from vinyl stuck to 1.1mm thick carbon fibre sheet. they weigh in at 110g/ea inc the vinyl.

of course they are strictly 'show plates', but the lettering is 100% UK legal font & size in every way, and look a damn sight better than a lot of plates you see in use on the roads...

But what about at night time i hear you ask...

just_jack i think your right, they are absolutly perfect in every way in terms of letter height, width, stroke and spacing, the only thing they are missing is the BS stamp and an address. ANPR and speedcameras should pick them up with no problems at all.

i spent a long time reading the UK law before making these plates and i'm still not 100% on what is or isnt allowed and i think the real reason is that Mr Policeman doesnt actually know 100% what the law is on plates either!

the layout legislation of plates is baised on the year the plate is made and not the year the car was made, so if you take your 1959 mini and put new plates on it they must comply with the post 2001 reglations, although you have the option of black and silver plates because of its age.

as for vinyl only plates stuck on the bodywork/bonnet, i'm pretty sure they have never been legal yet never seem to get plod's attention, you get them a lot on MG B's and MX 5's yet im sure if i put them on my daily drive i wouldnt get 500 yards down the road before getting pulled (the police station isnt far from my house!)

They look good. And I don't think you'll have a problem with them.

I run the pressed aluminuim type plates. Which I think are even lighter.. *wink*

Theirs only one way to find out if the cameras pick em up but i dont surgest you go and do it. *oh well*

They do look priddy genuine and i have seen carbon effect plates before but never genuine carbon ones. *smiley*

as far as im aware its the law that something has to be printed on the bottom of the plate as to where it came from, im not totally sure if this is an MOT thing?

Have you had them on the scales?

Carbon Weezel did pure carbon fibre ones before with the letters sprayed on in silver for "show purposes" but were £50 for a pair, looks nice though!

You have to have the company name and postcode where they were made and the BS mark to be legal plates, but obvioulsy you cant just stick that on them and suddenly their legal. Its not an MOT issue, but a UK road law issue.

£50 is about the going rate for a pair but very few companies sell them, the carbon alone comes in at around 40 quid. The only site that I could find making them were selling for £50 but used totally the wrong font hence making them myself.

very pretty!! why not just use vynal? carbon compo is very expensive and weighs 10 fold more than fresh air, stick on plates rock, and are cheap as! if you want to get really anal get very thin vynal like ysed on f1 advertising, or just dont go to burger king. no offence intended btw.

ABS and traction control are for people that should not have bought a car that fast!
To build a fast car from demon tweeks parts is more expensive than a Bugatti Veyron outright!!

vinyl only stuck on plates are not a favorite of the old bill as ANPR camera's can struggle to read them due to angle and curvature and thats when Mr Plod gets really annoyed.

I didnt actually make them for weight saving purposes but because I have curley carbon arches, carbon door cars so just wanted something else to match the theme, plus they look damn cool.

I just knew the weight saving junkies would be interested as well hence the topic.

I think your plates are awsome mate, period. But if the stazi find it harder to read stick on numbers, then stick on numbers it must be, they aint illegal yet as far as I know, and on the back it is a complete non issue, as long as the letters are legal and they are on reflective matearial. So I say save weight and screw the new world order!!!

nope, vinyl stick on plates that you stick directly to the car bodywork have never been legal on any age car, and you wont find anyone selling them as legal either.

Pre 1973 cars you are allowed to use 'black and white' plates, that is white, grey or silver letters on a black background, but they still need to be a plate and not just stuck on.

Post 73 the plate style is determined by the year the plate is fitted and not the year of the car. so if you buy new plates for your 74 car they will have to comply with the post 2001 regulations.

Apparently there is a loophole where you can be legal if you paint the plate on the bonnet of the car rather than sticking it on, but im not 100% sure on that one.

Does this apply to pre-73 pressed aluminium plates? I've just had a "fully legal set" made up (needed the V5 & utility bills) and, as expected, the plates I got are just the registration with silver border, no company names, BS mark?
