Hi

My mate has a Ford Escort RS2000 4x4 and the rear wheel bearing has gone. To cut a long, long story short, the one that the local dealer gave him, turned out to be wrong so we had to strip it down and go back to the original manufacturer of the bearing to get a new one.

The new one came down and becuase the old one was ever so slightly too big, it has englarged the hole so the new one is rattling around inside.

What do you think my options are? A new hub isn't available from Ford anymore and since only 500 of these cars were made, it is unlikely to find a 2nd hand one.

My thoughts are, as they have two bearings, can I get away with opening up the hole a little more (say an extra 2mm) and then fitting a spacer inside and then the bearing? Would this be ok? If so, can anyone recommend someone who would be able to do this?

Thanks

could you get a machine shop to machine out and fit an insert to suit the correct size of bearing?

Having said that, did ford not use the same hub on any of the other fleet - escort cossie, sierra etc?

I would of thought ford would have used the same hub on other cars? If so your sorted, if not the above sounds like a plan

Or maybe you coud do the same as when you get an engine block bored? Take the bearing and get it machined to the same size?

How loose is the new bearing in the hub? You could glue it in with bearing fit if it is a reasonable fit.

Thanks guys.

Was going to see if I can get a machine shop to do that.

The outer diameter is 59mm and I would say that the hole is now 59.5mm. I was thinking about getting a machine shop to machine out the hole to 61mm and then get them to make up an insert that is 59mm internal diameter and 61mm outer diameter so that it all fits in nicely.

I asked Ford to cross check but they couldn't. The bearing was a nightmare to get hold of as the part that the Ford system said was way too big and in the end, they gave me one for a van that looked almost right but turned out to be a nightmare. Even today, they noticed a different screen and it says that you cannot get the bearings and you have to buy a new hub, which you can't get either.

Just been on eBay and found 1 4x4 breaking so sent them a text - Thanks Rob

Tom - What glue is this and would it work for this gap? All I need it to do is take up the little slack.

If the bearing will drop straight in then it is no good. If it still requires a knock from a hammer or push from a press to get it in then some bearing fit (loctite) will do the job so long as you get both parts clean and thoroughly degreased.

That idea might sound feasible. But what you are proposing is a 1mm thick bit of pipe, perhaps less.

Not something easily machined

What type of bearing does it use ? Is it a big single double roller, or a taper style ?

Another option may be this spray metal stuff ? Not sure on specifics, but they spray it on to build the metal back up, then machine it down again.

I would say at present, there is a 1mm gap in total (0.5mm each side of the bearing).

Not sure on the specifics but was thinking about machining it out so you can fit a 2mm thick sleeve.

I have thought about things like trying to wrap the bearing in a sleeve made myself out of thin metal and then press it in but it may be too mess and not hold it properly.

Looking at it from a different angle so to speak, why not go to a good bearing supplier and see what other sizes are available.
