Going to be routing my fuel lines, and mounting my pump at the weekend but i need some advice.

I've gone for 8mm OD feed and 10mm OD return.
Metro turbo fuel pump.
this filter.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FIESTA-MK5-1-25-1-3-...=item3f03871f46 [8mm tails]
Standard fuel tank so i'm doing the 't pice trick' using an 8mm brass fitting.

Just wandering if the filter will be good enough and am i better off putting it before or after the fuel pump?? i know ideally it wants to go before the pump so the pump doesnt get fudged but i dont want to put any strain on the pump if the filters too restrictive?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance, James.

Depends on the fueling type (carb/inj)

In my opinion for injection the best overall solution is a 100micron filter before the pump and a 30micron after it.

100 before as the pump needs a relatively unrestricted feed but needs to be protected from shit in the tank, and 30 after as 100 isn't fine enough for injectors.

Carbs, no idea, never use em!

I use an spi tank with a puma pump, i was going to fit another filter but decided it was another leak point and as the pump pump had a filter built in i thought what the hell. But reading this makes me wonder if i did the right thing!!

I would never fit a filter with such small pipes before the pump. It will heavily restrict it and cause cavitation

On the metro van we have the feed from the tank T'ing into the return line, then an injection fuel filter with 8mm tails (doesn't need to be any bigger as that's the hose size we have used) then the standard metro turbo fuel pump using the standard supply tube upto the regulator. Works a treat.

Those filters will be designed for the pumped side, not suction.

I used a free flowing one with 10mm before and even then the pump was screaming. 8mm is far far too small for an efi pump to be used as a pre-filter

Might be a good idea to swap ours round then. Pump does make some racket to be fair.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Forgot to mention, my 100micron filter and pipes before the pump is all in AN-8, after the pump/reg/return etc is AN-6.

Not as simple as that.

Depends on your setup though.

I'd imagine an OEM efi tank will have some form of gauze or strainer in front of the pump. In this instance I wouldnt be overly concerned about a filter before the pump.

If your fuel pickup is DIY with no form of filtration at all, then IMO you really should have some for of free flowing filter. This is purely to protect the pump. Nothing more. The Bosch style roller vane pumps arent tolerant of dirt at all.

Under normal operation the pump should just sound smooth. No odd noises etc especially as it's having an easy life not really having to generate any pressure.
If it sounds erratic, it's likely the pump is cavitating

We're using the standard pickup with gause in the tank, which goes to the filter then T's into the return which goes to the pump input

Read the metro van's build thread. It's all there with pictures.

I'm using the standard mini fuel tank, and i've had a look inside it and i presume there is no filter inside the tank already!?

Do you have any links to any free flowing fuel filters?

Now i'm thinking of having the fuel outlet > free flow filter > 10mm t-peice > pump > injection filter [like the one in my first link]??

I'm in a right pickle now as i don't want the fuel pump to suffer from cavitation from having a restrictive filter but at the same time i dont want to not have a filter and fuck the pump *oh well*

the std tank has a bit of mesh on the pick up, nothing special but traps the larger crap,
mine doesnt as my tank is now modified
mine goes tank - pump - focus filter - fuel reg - carb

i could doo with having a big pre pump filter but would need one with 12-14mm in/outlets as my fuel lines are half inch from tank to pump

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

that is what i done on my tank welded a 13mm pipe at the bottom of the tank for the fuel pump and welded a 10mm pipe at the top of the tank for the return fuel on my car i have twin tanks so i welded 8mm pipe next to the 13mm one so i can link the two tanks

If there is already a gauze in tank, there is no need for a filter prior to the pump. Especially not a restrictive one.
