I've gone through 2 pairs of old mountain bike gloves and I've never gotten on with those rubber fronted fabric backed gloves, see below.

What do you all use/swear by?

I need dexterity and durability.

also a get your hands dirty person, i'm told fast orange is good, i use manista.

sometimes use latex gloves but then end up tearing or getting caught in rotating things trying to take your hand in with them

I use gloves, mainly because my hands go dry and flakey when working too much. I think it all started when working as a mechanic and using the Wurth hand cleaner which takes more than dirt off!

I use the rubber examining/disposable gloves when doing most things mechanical and some thicker mechanics gloves for metal work etc.

Speed doesn't kill, suddenly becoming stationary, now that's what'll get ya!

Dirty hands all the way, and break out the latex gloves when im dealing with loads of grease or oil/brake fluid. Cant live with gloves on, cant feel what im doing and irritate the shit out of me.

I do both, dirty and clean with wipes I get from RS. And I also use touch n tough nitrile gloves that also come from RS. They are the best and logest lasting single use glove, although expensive almost £15 for 100 gloves. But they don't rip at the first hurdle!

I never used to wear gloves but having seen the results of some nasty dermatitis on a guy at work I now try to use them as much as possible.

There is nothing macho about getting your hands mucky, your skin is great durable stuff but can only put up with so much.

At work I use one out of the following.

Good general glove, nice and thin good feel. Not great for super oily mucky jobs. I also use these at trackdays to keep the muck off when loading/unloading etc.

Although they may look similar, these are a LOT thicker than the ones above. Also the rubber cover is very very tough and durable. These are great for the dirty oily greasy jobs as it doesn't get thru the blue rubber. You still have good grip and dexterity.

Finally these are the boys for super oily stuff, working on hydraulics. Keep all the oil off your hands. Nicknamed "donny brascos" by Carl, now known as "brascos" by myself and my mate Adam.

The thin latex/surgical gloves are good if you can get along with them, personally I really don't like them as they give me sweaty hands. Great and cheap as Steve says if you can get along with them. I do have a box, I use them only really for 1 job, doing CV gaiters, as you get plastered double quick time doing this, and if you use any of the gloves above they are only fit for the bin after.

PS
All the gloves in pictures are less than £3 a pair as far as I know.

I buy blue nitrile gloves at autojumbles at about £5 a box of 100. Unless you snag them on something sharp I can even re-use them when I return to the workshop after a break.

I find latex and polythene ones useless, lasting about 10 mins - and they wind themselves around the handles on the machine tools !

You need nitrile coated gloves, especially with oils and solvents and petrol, rubber and latex will just break down, these are really good and at a great price

They also do the disposable nitriles.

surgical gloves here, used to just let my hands get dirty but got fed up hiding my hands on nights out cause i couldnt get staining out my skin from diesel-engine-oil, grease etc. but of a pain as they rip easy but cant really get on with anything thicker and still manage to work in modern cramped engine bays.

Denis, try some of the thin ones with coated palm and fingers, I was the same but these things are great, I can wear them for hours no problem. What is your address I'll send you a pair to try if you like.

latex surgical gloves here too although I wouldn't mind a pair of more durable mechanics gloves for cleaner work (the workshop is very cold in the winter.

I used to use rubber gloves, the crappy thin ones that rip soon as you snag a nut, but I've found some that are a bit thicker and don't rip as easy, I think vets use them, I get them from work *happy*

I use these gloves quite a lot. The rubber coating is very thin so there is virtually no loss of dexterity, but it keeps the worst of the muck off. I can suffer with dry skin for days if I get loads of oil and muck on them, but I never have a problem when wearing these.

The grey/black gloves are good for light use. But watch out, they burn easy when using a grinder lol

The heavy rubber backed cotton are good for some stuff at the roadside or under the car. But no use for nuts/bolts etc

As for latex, they stink. Get vinyl gloves used for food preparation. They dont leave your hands smelling like you've been wanking with a condom.

And for hand cleaner, Yellow Manista is definitely the best

Although a lot of these "no water" hand wipes in a tub are bloody fantastic. It's amazing the grease/oil they remove.

latex gloves here. Mainly because i can get them for free in work. :)

Thicker rubber gloves for working with anything sharp, like blades and cutting cylinders.
