Could you shot peen the gears and the gearbox casing to increase its strength? Or would this be a bad idea? Edited by Utking on 13th May, 2011. |

ive not heard of anybody ever doing the casing, but i cant see any reason why it would harm it if done properly.
And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers! |

Yes, but if it takes all the moly of the synchro cone, wouldn't that be bad? |

Yes i understand, but what if you shot peen the helical gears? i understand that the load on these goes to the side, and on the thrust bearing and casing. Would it help anything?

Surely, there will always be someone who disagrees. I was reading through some information, where NASA did some tests on shot peening of gears, and they did improve.
