Southern Norway.

Could you shot peen the gears and the gearbox casing to increase its strength? Or would this be a bad idea? *tongue*

Not very sunny swanage

ive not heard of anybody ever doing the casing, but i cant see any reason why it would harm it if done properly.

Gears are often done, and are a very good idea imho.....

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

Yes, but if it takes all the moly of the synchro cone, wouldn't that be bad?

Yes i understand, but what if you shot peen the helical gears? i understand that the load on these goes to the side, and on the thrust bearing and casing. Would it help anything?
Sorry if you think i'm asking stupid questions :)

Surely, there will always be someone who disagrees. I was reading through some information, where NASA did some tests on shot peening of gears, and they did improve.

Anyways, this was just to share some thoughts with you :)

Australia oi oi oi!

missed this post.

i got all my gears done, the bloke did not cover the moly coating on the gears properly.

if you get them shot peened they have to be capped off with ABS plastic bottle caps what ever, as i told him!!

just be very clear!! these metalurgists know best & they do but somethings need to be done a certain way with our beloved old cars.

just remember tape will not work, the peen will penetrate the tape.

I ended up shoot peening all my drops everything & cryo treated them going strong no problems.

my actuall gear set i only cryo treated, but you can peen & cryo as above but do as i said above.

just make sure they make up jig & plastic fully coating the moly on the gears!! or like me you will need some new gear set. * he paid lol!

will see how it works out once i bolt me blower on.
