Gentlemen,

I'm about 1% into stripping a T2 for a rebuild but have already got a problem. The compressor housing WILL. NOT. come off. Its been soaking in WD40 all night and i'v been using a large 'persuading' device bashing it this way and that, but all to no avail.

Any other ideas on how I could best get the bloody thing to come off just using your average set of tools?

I thought about heating it up, but dont have any means of heating the housing up like using a gas torch or heat gun etc.

Ideas?

Recommended cooking instructions?

Should i baste it in a marinade first? Does it count as one of my 5 a day?

A bigger hammer and lots of swearing usually does the trick. Heating usually does work if you can get hold of a heat gun.

If it's rusty, you might try a mix of acetone and transmission fluid. Supposed to work better than WD-40 for loosening rusted nuts/bolts.

I was thinking that as i read it!!!

What i do when i take them apart.... sit turbo in vice, tap circlip round with a centre punch or simmilar to make sure it moves freely/try and free it up if its seized, then fill area around circlip with plus gas, leave for a few hours, then i clamp the turbo (core) in the vice and get a hammer, insert the handle into the cold side outlet, then start to wiggle backwards and forwards until it moves freely, then i pop the circlip out, (obviously if youve managed to do this earlier, so much the better, but often they are pretty stuck in the groove!) Then the turbo should just come apart....

Obviously im not suggesting putting a hammer handle into the turbo and using it as a lever is the right way to do it, clearly if you use to much force, then you could break the casing, but gently working it backwards and forwards has never yet failed me!

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

Haha yes, I removed the circlip! Im not quite that incompetent lol

Good news, I took it down to the local garage who are really friendly and do all the work on my mini when i'm at uni and they sorted it in half an hour with a butane torch and assorted hammers.

I probably would have been able to do it if i was at home, but being at uni, I'v only got a small toolbox with all essential gear. Unfortunately things like butane torches and vices are all back at home. Bit excessive to be carting to and from from Lufbra every semester lol

I'v now got all the banjos and actuator off and am going to now take the compressor housing off and get on with the rebuild.

I'm going to try and make a step-by-step on it too so that should come in help for anybody else planning it

I'm now stumped again.

I'v got the turbo down to the core, but am totally at odds as to how to get the compressor nut off.

The nut is a 5/16 imperial size which is fine as iv got the right sized spanners, but the end of the opposite wheel doesn't have a nut, but rounded triangle which makes up part of the shaft.

I'v tried mole grips as tight as i can possibly get them on, but they either come off under the strain or the shaft slips in the teeth.

I'v just been down to B&Q to get a butane torch so i can heat up the compressor nut and see if that helps loosen it at all.

Ideas or suggestions?

This is turning into a nightmare!

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Sooooo.

The butane torch hasnt worked either. The nut is so hot that the spanner is getting almost too hot to use if you try for too long.

Anybody want to come round and see if you can break this little fucker?\

*angry*
