How long do you think my gearbox has got left in it? It's crunching into second at high revs unless I treat it particularly carefully. I only drive it occasionally.

Thinking about a rebuild but just haven't got the cash at the moment...

Twice the length from the middle to one end. *tongue*

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Sorry, I know it sounds like a pretty stupid question. Just wondering if crunching is a sign of impending doom, or if it might still have a while left.

If it was just baulk rings that needed replacing is that normally a costly procedure?

It doesn't just sound like a stupid question.

The "crunching" itself is worn out syncro cones or (most likely) baulk rings.

Not a sign of impending doom from those bits - they are easily replaced - but a sign of high mileage, so not long left before other bits need replacing too.

EDIT - and changing the baulk rings is cheap if you do it yourself - working on the A series transverse gearbox isn't really that difficult and only needs a few "special" tools.

Ah right, ok. Strange as the engine was rebuilt only 3500 miles ago (I purchased the car since then). I'm guessing that the gearbox was not rebuilt at the same time.

Thanks for your help, I'll get in touch with the seller if I still have his number and double check.

No, it's all standard as far as I know.
