right i have managed to get hole of a insert and a drillbit but couldnt get a tap for the insert does anybody know what size tap i need for a 3/8 unc insert |

You need the specific helicoil tap to suit the 3/8UNC insert. They are oddball sizes specifically to suit the inserts.

I am suprised you managed to get just an insert. Usually they come as a kit with drill, tap, inserts and installation tool. E.g. everything needed to use them.
