They did it on Scrapheap Challenge, quite a few years ago.

A large turbo from a diesel engine IIRC, plumbed up to be a gas turbine and with an added afterburner.

It was raced against a pulse-jet engine made from bits of pipe.

IIRC the turbo "jet engine" didn't make the last round as its oil supply (to the bearings) failed so was deemed unsafe to run.
