Okay so I've forgotten to update this so here goes whats been happening over the summer:

So after I had the engine completlely dismanteled I went over to halfords to get some engine paint and set about giving it a spruce:

So as you can see its in a pretty poor visual apperance :) Didnt really fancy getting dirty so took a leaf out my friends book and got the missus so do the dirty work for me.

Here it is all painted up and drying:

Next morning after it dried:

Winner! Looks lovley and red now, im told red ones go faster? *wink*

So whilst I was saving cash to buy the rest of the parts I thought it would be good to change the diff and clean out the box:

Old vs New:

Took us half an hour of sledge hammering to get the old pin out, this was the point my dad believed me that the single pin diff's are weak:

All built up:

Awsome! Ready to go back in, so now it was time to clean out the gb with diesel, it had the awful black sludge in the bottom filled with tiny metal fragments, was a bit confusing - turns out the bottom drop gear bearing that goes in the bell housing (forget its name) had completley dissintergrated and was no where to be found, further more the main bearing for the 1st motion shaft had broken as well but that was still there. Upon inspection it was quite clear the drop gears needed replacing as when the bearing broke up it chewed the idler gear =/

Heres the pictures after I cleaned out the box:

Only took about 4 hours =p haha

So a few weeks later I got my alloy rad delivered and the old one was shot away so I decided to try and fit it before changing the engine. What an absolute kick in the balls. So as you can predict all the clips holding the hoses on were seized and rusty - fantastic so i managed to take the hose off from the heater pipe and the engine bend and fold it then it finally came out with much brute force and swearing.

The haynes manual said to take the bonnet off but me being a teenager didnt think this was a good idea so I kept smacking my head on it and causing myself more hassle. I thought it was such an issue getting the bottom hose out that I had to attach it to the rad putting it back in - well 5 hours later I was still in the same position so after whacking my head again I took the bonnet off, slid the radiator in and tried to put the bottom hose on - to my disgust and joy it went straight on and I could of had the job finished 5 hours ago ¬¬ further more my girlfriend came out to help earlier on and managed to jam the radiator into the cowling and bent most of the fins - In my infinate wisdom I thought hitting the radiator with a soft faced hammer would knock it out. It didnt. So now my brand new shiny radiator has a huge dent in the front and bent fins too - fantstic. After I got the hose connected and tightened up with a new clip, antifreeze and water put in, checked it for leaks - all were great winner I was there. Now I only had to attach it to the cowling. Guess what because its a chinese rad it wont fit onto the cowling and due to my anger the cowling is 'slightly' mishapen. Thankfully the hoses keep it pretty solid and I managed to get a single screw onto the cowling so that will have to do haha *tongue* anyway enough text heres the piccies:

Old trash vs new shinyness:

In the car:

The dent:

But the cooling is SOOO much better the car feels smoother to drive as well so deffinatly a worth while modification :)

Thanks for reading chaps, have a shit load of parts delivered recently so will be updating soon - deadline is before I go back to uni in Jan :)

Heres a piccie of the turbo I will be using as well its a GT28:

Win!

I told her not to go too close to the edge cz i didnt want paint on a gasket surface itll be okay because its at the back of the engine *smiley*

Gt28 cost me 30 from a friend who bought a new compressor wheel for it a few days previously

Wouldn't worry about excess paint. It comes off nice with one of those razer blade scraper thingies.

Cylinder head is finished!!!!

So I was after an unleaded conversion on the turbo head and was recommended to go to southam mini metro centre by Rich1380, went and dropped the head off in its tatty state. Got it back and it looked pristine!!! Actually considered not painting it because it looked good in bare metal!

Was still at uni so thought I'd have a go at painting it before I cam home for christmas so I could put it in the oven for a few hours to dry it properly, only brush we had was a 25mm one and it didnt work out so well, so wiped as much paint off as I could and took it home, then proceeded to clean it with some white spirit the next day *tongue*

Got fed up of just wishing it was red soo I woke my girlfriend up yesturday afternoon as I wanted her to paint it *happy*

so here it is:

Not looking happy as it was cold and raining *happy*

Paints going on!

Second Coat

Third Coat

Put it in a cardboard box with a hair dryer attached to dry it out and my dad forgot to turn it off so it was on for about 15 hours drying out.

Here it is all dry and with the masking removed:

Lovley Jubbly!!

Should be making alot more progress over the next 10 days or so :)

Cheers! *happy*

Mate looks good,
Just a Tip I found, if you get some fine sandpaper on a block and do all the flat bits it will clean that head up.

So today I started the rebuild :)

Had to finish assembling the gearbox so that was first, got to use my new tools from christmas today or so i thought:

Had to get the nut off of the first motion shaft to take off the drop gears and replace the bearings.

Was an absolute cunt to get off, warmed it up so it was glowing red with a welding torch and the spanner still didnt touch it even with an extra bit of levy. Had to go get a deep 28mm socket and it came off then woohoo - already 2-3 hours down :(

So after we finished taking the nut off it all came out rather loosley, put in the new first motion bearing:

old:

New installed:

Time to install the new oil seals for my diff covers:

Naked and cleaned up:

Jobs a gooden:

Time to put the cross pin diff back in:

All cleaned up and ready with new gaskets:

Diff installed:

All back together:

So the gearbox rebuild is complete :) and tomorrow should be drilling the block and installing my water feed for the turbo and hopefully start rebuilding the bottom end.
