this is the first time ive ever fitted a cam, put it with without any probs, but realised it was hitting the crank, i read somewhere that this means its 180degrees out, so i took the cam out and turned it 180degreees and it still hits the crank just the other side of tdc is you understand? am i missing the point here or is it something really obvious?

cheers.

Have you got the timing gear and chain on yet?

first time i hadnt, i assumed taking the cam out and turning it 180deg. would solve the problem, so put the cam back in put the timing chain and sprockets back on, then realised it was still hitting the crank?

Then it is timed in wrong.

If you are using a vernier, With number one cylinder at TDC, set number one inlet lobe to full lift. Then turn the crank the prescribed number of degrees clockwise (ATDC). The head must be off to do it like this. You can set the crank to the prescribed degree and then set the cam to full ift on number one inlet if the head is fitted though, you just have to be carefull not to use too much force and 'feel' for valve/ piston contact.

If you are using standard gears, the dots won't be lined up

Ok got you, so basically put the cam in so that the no1 inlet lobe is at full lift, then turn the crank 106 degrees atdc?

Will give it a go tonight cheers buddy

Also, the small gear is quite stiff on the crank, should it just push/pull on/off the crank?

There needs to be a little resistance on the sprocket, but not much.

Check the groved for the woodruff key is clear. It might need a quick file out to make it slide on/off nicely

I'm not sure its the new sprocket as the old one was stiff to take off?

check the woodruff key in the cam then, it might not be finished perfectly

What cam do you have.

I once head of a guy who built an engine, but just could not get it to run. He gave up in the end and sold it. The new owner found it had an 8-port cam in a 5-port engine.

An 8-port cam will hit a conrod even if timed in correctly (with the wrong rods). The above was on a 1070, so it missed.

it all went a bit tits up, the dots were lined up on my standard setup, i took the timng gear off they when undoing the nut on the standard cam i moved the crank, so when i put the new cam and sprockets on they dont line up, i cannot even get the small sprocket off the crank, when i lever it off it pulls the woodruff key with it until it gets stick and wont come any further?

you need to lever it from 2 opposite sides at ones applying equal pressure or it will just twist on the crank

managed to get the larger sprocket off by taking the centre peice out, got the cam roughly timed in, struggled to get the chain back on without taking the little sprocket off, and now the crank does not hit the cam, only problem is the larger sprocket is now on further than the smaller on very slightly so does not turn over very smooth in places, will have a look at it tomorrow, is there a washer of some sort of something that goes between the triangle plate that holds the cam in and the sprocket?

There can be shims behind the crank sprocket. Had to take them all out on the van's engine
