I'm thinking regarding where the idler gear bearings sit and also the input shaft bearing in relation to the first motion roller bearing.

I have a spare gearbox I was planning on rebuilding but don't have the transfer case to go with it, and would like to avoid pulling apart another engine if I can avoid it for a matching idler case and gearbox casing.

To be honest, I wouldn't risk it. Got no reason to defend my comment, but would you use different end caps on con rods? I've always assumed most components are matched sets.

To expand on my earlier reply.

You don't swap around end caps on con rods as they are machined as a pair. Gearboxes and transfer cases are not machined as a pair, so you can interchange them.
