Anyone know what sort of current is drawn by a pe-engeged starter when cranking? Cheers

My guess would be about 140-160 on a low compression turbo engine.

my high torque starter draws 150 amps, so the pre engaged must be 200 at least

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I'm suprised at that Colin,

I've measured it on an inertia one and IIRC it was about 220, I'd guess the pre engaged one would be similar.

I'll be honest and say that I actually think the high torque drew 125 amps. It was 2009 when I last measured it and have since fitted a 200 amp fuse link on the boot earth strap.

Pre engaged or inertia, no matter, they are not geared so the motor takes the full torque so amps will be similar. The high torque starters are geared so only see part of the torque required to turn over the engine. Basically for the high torque to draw 200 amps, the engine is very big

Might check ours tomorrow. Would you expect a high torque starter to turn the engine over faster? We got 160rpm with a standard starter and 170rpm with the high torque jobbie.

I expected them to be a bit slower than a normal one,

mine cranks over at about 200-220 rpm, I supose your engine is still a bit tight.

Mine cranks at around 180rpm, Id need to check some old logs to be sure

I think the thing with the high torque starters is that they use a smaller motor that runs at a higher rpm, which is then geared down. This increases the torque while reducing the current draw at the same time keeping the rpm pretty normal.

there may be differencies in the base units used between different 'manufacturers'. Mine was from Moss, and looks very much like the Lynx AE units

This is why i ask, i was thinking of protecting the live feed from the battery to the starter as it passes through two bulkheads and the interior. whats the best way of achieving this?
