Force Racing ICT Dept Manager Miglia Turbo Am frum Yokshyer tha noes!

Chaps, my cars only firing on 2, a couple of days ago i found thos issue, i checked all the wiring on my mj and everything seemed good. After some convos with john boy i finally discovered that my coil pack had to be plugged in 1 to 4 from left to right not right to left! Which says to me the wiring was the wrong way around perhaps. Any ways the car ran fine upto about half hour ago. Ive had the clutch out put it back and now its back to square one.

Cheers

Mike

Ford coilpacks fire 1 & 4 together and 2 & 3 together - hence them being called wasted spark - there are only two coils in a coilpack, not four......

The only slight issue is that the current flows through 1 & 4 simultaneously (same with 2 & 3) so one plug gets a positive feed, the other gets a negative.

It was a problem for Ford for a while - to the extent they listed different plugs for 1/2 to 3/4 - but they overcame it with different settings inside the EDIS module.

As you have already found swapping the leads made a difference earlier, I suggest you try a newer EDIS module.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???

Its never been an issue, however ive tried a different edis to no avail, the only thing ive done is lengthend the coil pack wiring, however im almost certain the wirings correct, i think im gunna swap the wires over tomoz to double check.

like rod says though even if youd fucked up the wires, 3 and 4 cant be the same fault because its on different coils

If its never been an issue before, it may suggest either leads breaking down or plugs???

You might have an imbalance of resistance in the leads causing it to favour one of the 2 plugs and that one seeing considerably more voltage than the other. It's ohms law.

Do you have a multiple meter?

Have you used shielded wire for the bit you extended? Did you join the shield? Could be getting interference. Got loads throwing round if you want a bit of new to try

Didnt think the coil pack one needed to be shielded?

No, you're right. It's the pip/saw wires all the way up to the MJ that are shielded.

Check the resistance of the lead cores end to end, see what they measure

Well ive been at it all day, tried different leads plugs etc etc, spark on all cylinders and plugs, however if i remove 3 and 4 plugs, nothing, remove 1 and 2 and the engine splutters? Ive also checked compression, no probs there, ive also checked for leaks between the manifold and head, however i would have thought that would cause such a huge problem.

I really am stumped and a bit drained with this one. Im off to buy some chocolate.

Sounds like the head gasket has blown between 3 and 4, but the compression test would suggest not?

It is possible to get a spark, but under high compression they may not be sparking. I guess you've swapped the plugs over to check the fault always stays with the same cylinders?

Does it run any better when hot/cold?

Yes all plugs removed, on a side note the misfire appears to have shifted to oposite side? My widebands off the scale lean?

Even on choke? Would having my wideband plumbed into my mj without any data set be an issue?

Are you sure that the plugs are ok.

Whenever I do anything to my car it seems to want a new set afterwards.
