hi everyone..

well today me and a friend started taking apart the minis engine as it was smoking and driving really badly. we had already found some creamy gunk in the rokkor cover so were not expecting good news

the gasket seems to be fine.. but the number 2 piston has got a big dent in it... now my question is, any ideas on what caused this? i did notice the dizzy was running without the vac pipe connected.

also these rokkors look strange to me, are they not supposed to my alined with the valve, on some of them just the edge touches the valve.. is this normal?

this pic shows what i mean better

cheers

leeds/wakefield.

that piston is done for , a rebuild is on the cards,
and thoase rockers look about right for the standard limit of missalignment

That piston damage is caused by detonation.

hi guys...

carl, i thought the rockers had to be dead center on the valves...

phil as for detonation, could it be for the fact that vac pipe on the dizzy was disconnected? the fuel pressure regulator was also set to 1 or 2 psi less than what its ment to be...

thanks for you comments guys

I doubt that it was to do with the vac pipe. This is only used at cruise or tick over. Once on boost it would make no difference. If you are running a dizzy though what is the max timing set at. If it advances to >25 you could be causing problems.

If the fuel pressure was low you could have been leaning out, again could cause the problem.

ben H, i have no idea how to check the timing degrees mate.. just recently started messing with the mini. all i know i learnt on here and watching the bill solis dvd. some help maybe?

benross, the rocker question just shows how little i know..lol the engine was running stock boost so 7 or 8 psi if im not mistaken. no bleed valve, no ecu and standard actuator.

i looked at the cilinders, and no cris cross marks on them, so i suspect your right about the milage but dont know as it was bought off ebay.

standard boost is 4psi with the metro's ecu removed, my guess is that timing was too far advanced and it has done a lot of miles.

Looks exactly the same as my hypatec piston after avon last year. I bet its blown through all the rings!

Yep.

Snap ! Detonation.

Here's a pic of my No 4 piston in April last year.

You'll find yours is burnt down into the ring lands when you get the piston out. Hopefully the bore isnt goosed, mine was ok. But if yours is a high miler then I'd go to the next piston size up with a rebore as well if I were you. It's not difficult so don't get too put off just yet mate. Chin up, those new pistons are just waiting for you !

Good luck with the rebuild mate, you'll need that Bill Sollis DVD now but certainly lots of advice on here.

Richard.

Yes Mike.

The dead ones were 6cc cast Omega's machined to 8cc, trouble is with my head combo it gave a 9.4 CR but I only realised this after I lost No 4 through det (more likely too much boost and too much advance). They were done by Honeycrock before they went bust. I was told they were machined to 10cc and should've checked when I was building the original engine, lesson learnt the hard way there.

The new Omegas are 10cc, still cast but taken out to 14cc and dropped .040in down the bore by Bowden Engineering in Filton, Bristol. Top job. With my 26cc head they give me a more respectable 8.3 CR.

Richard.

thanks for the coments everyone...

turbominivanman, that look almost identical to mine... i also have to congratulate you on your mini, its awesome... shame your selling.

will have to start saving up for a complete rebuild, or maybe just get an engine done from mr Benross if i can scrape together enough penies...

quick question... whats the max boost i can run safely before having to go to megajolt

Don't have to go to megajolt if you don't want too.

oh ok.... i thought that over a certain limit megajolt was mandatory...

quick question, my freind has a mini turbo also, and its smokes a bit, and it low on compresion on 2 and 3. we suspect the head gasket, should have it off tomorrow. any way would a blown head gasket cause blueish smoke? the whole engine was rebuilt about a month ago..
