A bloke I work with has got the 1.8 petrol version and the only issue he has is the key card, I think he's on his 3rd one now iirc.

one day boost will be mine!

I quite like those. However if you are after a budget family motor I think the Mondeo would be a better choice.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

horrific "consumables" cost and dodgy card keys as above - we had a friend whom ran one for a year - nearly bankrupted them - soon swapped over to a Passat again!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Lagunas do have alot of leccy issues, my uncles did set fire in his works car park about 4 hours after it had been parked up???

I'd say something VAG or mondeo
I believe the later ford diesels have a few VAG parts on them (will probably sound like a twat if I'm wrong about that)

Ive had Jap prior to my audi, i wouldnt touch another one with a 10ft barge pole. They great while they work but anything over 60k miles and things start to go, expect to pay silly money for the smallest of things. My corolla needed a new Lambda sensor, 90 odd quid, an equivalent ford one would cost about 20!

1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

Sorry dont agree with you at all, Jap parts are a little more but they break less, you clearly had a lemon and you get them from all marques.

After doing breakdown i would not touch any thing french, vauxhall, bmw or merc i would only go for vag, volvo, ford or jap

Fiat multipla would be my choice. I've got a petrol one at the mo and its the bollocks. I bought mine due to the seating arrangement and the fact I've got 3 children under 3 years.

Alot of fords use the pug deisel engines, focus mondeo fiesta, i wouldnt touch a renault but personally wouldnt mind a 407, alot of people always say bmws are crap but my experiances have pritty much always been good apart from early e90 330 engine ecu ghosting which fucked the head but got replaced under warrenty and then they did a softwear upgrade. Had a vaux astra td for 4 days on the fourth day the turbo went it had only done 179 miles, i think its really down to odds on all cars eg my 106 its a crap car the hg went once due to use error since then just a small oil leak, its survived hitting a dear, 3 foxes and a few birds and quote a few trips to avon and combe.
What ever takes your fancy would be best there are always good and bad points but renault seem to always be shit lol

Never had a renault car but if their vans are anything to go by, great for carrying bunches of flowers and baguettes around but wont last 10 mins in the hands of a british builder!

Speaking as a Renault owner myself. They are a money pit. I've replaced just about everything on a car thats only done 64K. Includng the engine. Aux belt snapped and took the cambelt off.

And the bloody alterantor gone pop this week to..

Great to drive when it works though.

I'll echo all the comments about the laguna - although the cars are good when they are going, they have plenty of electrical problems.

Personally I'd be looking at the VAG group but that is just my foolish brand loyalty!

I remember my dad had this shape Laguna when I was a kid... was bollocks, couldn't wait to get rid of it.
I'll echo the comments about going VAG... can go wrong with a bit of vag *wink*

VAG are ok, apart from my audi now needs a new flywheel due to the shitty dual mass thing! its not even 4 years old...

i've nearly had it a year, must be due to change it soon *wink*

To reinforce the 405, we had one and it was 100% reliable, don't think i missed a beat in the 4/5 years we had it, we used to tow with it too. I think the usual bits were done, tyres and clutch thats it.

A friend had an 04 120bhp dti, turbo went with 70k on, ecu gave up (£1200), os rear door lock stopped working and he couldn't lock it. All in 12 months. He now has a golf.

You still got the 172? I killed 2 alternators on my 182 and finished it off nicely with a valve touch piston situation!

renault comercials are crap aswell. We run a fleet of them at the council (mascots and masters) and i dont know of one which hasnt had a clutch or some kind of electrical fault. Seriously underpowered for what they have to put up with.
As for their cars again i dont even find them nice to drive.
