Car has been running great since the Smart performance rolling road session. Boost has been up to around 20psi for 1000 miles and ignition advance is pretty conservative.

It's gone from a fire ring on no 2 into a waterway.

Just when I felt it was time to dial in a bit more boost. :)

I'll be going to 11 studs this time round, but not sure it will help in this case.

That looks more like a dodgy gasket failure than an engine related failure.

If not that then under clamping.

I have to agree with Will there,

I just thought, did you change the gasket when you did the rocker bushes?

Changed the gasket when I re bushed the rockers.

My torque wrench is pretty new, so I'd hope that It's close to accurate.

Possibly another dodgy bk450?

I'm going to check the ignition timing with a gun again once it's back together.

Ambient temps were high when it went so perhaps the intake temps were high.

Water was around 80deg and oil 100deg read from the filter housing. Both normal.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

having looked at the gasket my monies on detonation at that level of boost you are in the twilight zone , one tad of bad fuel and ambient temps rising and your in the deepp stuff

maybe as well ? a head torque problem did you torque it to 55ft pounds ?

Head was tourqued to 55 ft/lbs and checked after a few heat cycles.

Fuel is a another consideration. I've been using the good Shell stuff for the majority of the time, but think that I last filled up at Sainsburys.

hmm could be a fuel problem then,

can yo remember what the timing is at 20psi up at the top end?

I reckon if you blow any more whack a cometic on it and torque to 200 ft lb lol

its probably an idea to rig up an IAT gauge though.

I'm sure we backed it off to around 18-20 deg at the rollers.

IAT would be nice.

Has it gone in the same place as the last one? Like you say get the strobe on it and check the timing corresponds with the reading on the laptop.

What afr's are you running?

Yeah still do the 11 stud thing, may as well while the lids off.

I'll have a think about an IAT gauge, Ideally you want a thermocouple as they react nice and fast.

If you had MS you'd already be logging it...

Afr is rich if anything. 11 something when on boost.

It's a different place to last time.

Right IAT gauge,

bit ugly, but cheap...

and you could use it anywhere even in the exhaust

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Digital-DC-Temperatu...=item3a678715cb

but you'll need a seperate sensor.

you need an open bulb k-type for IAT, the latter one linked is only good for exhaust, IAT response would be too slow.

next question is ........... whats your compression ratio is it 8.4:1? what intercooler are you running ?

Thanks for that Denis,
I was under the impression that even the housed TC's would act faster than normal IAT sensors, I've probably got some open bulb ones spare.

Vegard, 11 studs won't help this faliure, but as he spit the gasket out above the waterpump on the rollers at a bit over 20 psi I think its woth doing anyway while the head is off.

Steve, CR is 8.4:1 inter cooler is a big Allard jobbie taking up most of the grille area.

Don't bother with a gauge like that.

We have a little temp screen from a PC on the van. Just has a wire dangling into the gonzo's nose. Piece of cake and cheep

I think hes talkign about one of these kinda things http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LCD-Digital-Thermome...=item3cb9600bad except one where the "probe" is jsuta solder blob on the end of the wire for the smallest thermal mass possible.
