Ive recently got a new work laptop and its doesn't have a com port, so im having to use my OOOLLLLDDDD laptop for now. My old laptop is an HP omnibook xe2 if that makes any difference?

The problem is, it has no internet connection, and at the moment can't support a USB drive.

Has anyone got some USB drivers they could send me that work with windows 98?

Ive had a search on the tinterweb but tbh im not 100% sure what I am looking for and don't want to screw things up!

My plan is to burn a disc on this laptop then hopefully transfer the files onto the old one. *oh well*

Cheers
Matt

I have a habit of breaking laptops, so my other thought was that it might be best the new one stays at home, and I can then use the old one as something solid to jack the car up on. Lol

As I'm sure you are well aware, W98 did not come with built in support for USB drives, hence the need for a driver

I seem to remember there being a mini CD in my bottom draw at work which was for the first set of USB flash drives that came out

I'll have a look to see if it's still there in the morning and let you know

In the mean time have a look at the link below, but you may have to have specifically written drivers for the USB device you've got

At least ive been looking in the right place. I followed that link and followed the instructions and it did seem to do something. But I still can't seem to find an icon to open a USB stored device?

Ive got a USB connection on the back of the laptop, so wouldn't that mean that the laptop would be USB compatible from the start? I am completely computer illiterate so could be talking rubbish!

W98 came out before the USB connection became widely available, so has none (first version) or very little support (W98 Second Edition), even though it was ratified as a connecting device about 1995
It took a number of years before manufacturers started to include the connection as standard

When the USB was started to be put in to machines, device manufacturers had to create special drivers for their devices for the Operating Systems (OS) that were available at the time, which included W98

Also as it was new, PC/Laptop manufacturers didn't provide full support in the BIOS for the connection

Windows 98 was widely referred to in the IT industry as just as a Service Pack for Windows 95, as there were very little changes in the OS - Microsoft just called it something new, so that they could charge for it, where as Service Packs tend to be free

I'll let you know on that one Dave, I seem to be getting somewhere now.

Our IT guy at work has said exactly the same, im using 98 SE which seems a bit better than version 1! He advised advised me to try and use a USB 1 stick, and the laptop is able to read that USB (which means no more burning cds to tranfer data)! *happy*

Ive been given some links to update the BIOS which I'll try now. I have been offered an XP uprade free but the laptop doesn't have enough RAM to use it. lol

The IT guy at work has also given me a a USB to comm port adpater, which is a result! *happy* So at least my new laptop will work.

Fingers crossed!

I found the W98 driver disc in work

Do you still need any drivers or is everything working OK now?

I may still need it.... I have now installed the software I need, but im struggling to open any files I need in that program.

I have also found an ezip download (as mine was corrupt), but for some reason that doesn't open zip files? Is there any reason that I can't upload winrar or another zip program because it doesn't seem to want to open them?

The USB Driver can be found here

Here is an old Windows 98 compatible version of Winzip - Save it in to a folder and run the file - once extracted, run the setup.exe

Had exactly the same problem on my old Dell Latitude but I loaded Windows 2000 (have the discs if you need them)and used that to read the built in USB port as COM1.

Bought an old PCMCIA Wireless Modem card from 3D Computers and used that in one of the old card slots to get access to the internet to load Megatune. Slow but not bad.

Then with a USB/Serial adapter cable (which comes with its own CD) I can talk to my Megasquirt ECU via Megatune.

Took a bit of sorting but without Windows 2000 I couldnt have sorted it.

Good luck with yours.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.
