Journeying home, i started hearing a ridiculously whiny noise, i thought it may have been gav(madcatsminis) behind me at first, but when i rolled my windows up it got louder, now it doesnt matter what gear im in or neutral, and whether or not the clutch is depressed, but the noise seems to follow the revs, and it sounds like its coming from the drivers side. My clutch was slipping like a shit on the last run down the quarter but the lights buggered up so it didnt matter anyway. But any suggestions on what to start looking at?

Idler or primary gear would be a good place to start looking.

If its screeching if the clutch is in or out, then it;s unlikely to be transfer gears. Perhaps your water pump or alternator bearings are giving up?

Give some more info - like is it doing this when sat idling in neutral (not driving) or only when it's moving?

Dampers were great, its like driving a different car. It doesnt happen in neutral at idle, but if you leave it in neutral and rev you can hear it, and its far worse of a noise when under load. My alternator and waterpump are practically brand new so it isnt those

King Gaycharger, butt plug dealer, Sheldon Cooper and a BAC but generally a niceish fella if you dont mind a northerner

Collapsed first motion bearing in the gear box. We broke the one in the van last year at Avon. the S/c drops disguised the noise.

Get your box of pronto or you will end up needing a new gear set...

If it makes the noise on your driveway doing zero mph with the clutch pressed, and perhaps with it in any gear to be sure, then it can't be gearbox related.

Thats what i thought, but why would the drops be making that noise? Im not going to be using the car until ive sorted it anyway. Going to start by sorting the clutch because it needs doing anyway, then check and probably replace the drops for the spare ones i have, if that doesnt cure it it'll have to be a gearbox off job :(

I think i found the noise.
Opened (well, took off) my bonnet and for some odd reason my eyes immediately looked towards the radiator, sat there was my temporary overflow pipe. Still attached to the radiator, but somehow pulled itself round from the back, towards the fan side, and the fan has eaten through it a bit, took that off, started the car, listened very carefully and heard nothing, so took it for a little drive to see if it happened under load or when the car was warm, nothing.
So it seems it was that bit of hose, but foooooook me it was loud :S
Im glad i havent got to rip apart the engine, but ive still the clutch to look at.

Well a cheap fix *smiley*

there is nothing wrong with a A-series that a turbo can't fix.
