just wondering how they would line the holes up its not a standard place, spose i could get the head done first then the guys could match the drillings on the block, is it worth it? also why do people retap the gearbox thread to 5/16" is that worth it too?

Every little helps!

Many (myslef included) don't have 11 stud - but no-one can argue it doesn't improve things!

All they do usually is use a Payen gasket as the marker for drilling the head and block! Pretty crude - but works!

btw - you're not srtipping the engine just to do this are you? That would be silly - If you're taking it apart for another reason (or it's already in bits) then crack on!

The 5/16" thing is 'belt and braces' but maybe a little overkill IMO. I'd say simply swap the 'putty steel' standard 1/4" UNF bolts for cap heads (allen key bolts). These are high tensile items, and (almost always) precision made threads.

Going 5/16" means more work in the future whenever you take on a block or gearbox swap...

Another thing to consider - drilling the casing to 8.5mm (clearance) doesn't leave a lot of material around the holes in some areas... This could be considered worse than having a smaller hole and smaller bolt!

For Info.....

Cap head bolts have rolled threads rather than the cut threads that hex head bolts have. The rolled threads are a lot stronger due to they way they are formed.
