Got the engine apart and in pieces last night (cheers rich, if you're reading)

The damage is as follows:

1) Number 4 big end knackered. Rod for the bin, crank is ok.
2) Number 4 exhaust cam follower destroyed and a bent push rod, cam ok.
3) Primary gear bush knackered.

All seems to have been caused by excessive heat, reason for this is so far unclear, it's run perfectly until now.

Should all be back together for Harewood in august.

The van is fine, most of it made it all the way home and most of the damage is fixed...

In reality the damage is nowt, no machining required, just a few bits.

And I'm sure I'll sort the heat issue.

I use Millers CTV. Oil was not the issue it was lack of cooling.

Do you have an oil temp gauge? I would be very surprised if the oil got too hot on a drag weekend.

Perhaps related to this? See Sprockets posts about heat dissipation. I think he may just have a point.

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=430302

Am I right in saying that the 998 crank and rods are slightly less substantial in their construction (mass)? You are pushing more power than the majority of big bore turbo's on here. Could the combination of this and your lightweight clutch, along with plenty full bore drag starts be dumping loads of heat into that end of the crank?

I would be looking at the coolant flow around No. 4.

Fair point. I think I read something in minimag recently about 998's having poor cooling over that side of the block? I think they blocked off a couple of holes over no.1?
