So today i prep'd my cousins bonnet ready for paint, after he created 6-7 dents down one side from to much pressure when grinding.

So i applied the filler and smoothed them out, after that went on to lay some 1k etch primer and let it dry. By this point i was ready for primer. So i got some tack cloth and some soap and sugar spray (bought proper tack cloths this morning but missplaced it lol) and went to clean the panel but it felt rough and fibres seemed to appear,

so i rubbed them off with that rough sponge stuff bit like a scourer. Which seemed to work so hung the bonnet and sprayed the primer. But these fibres seemed to appear again, and only where i applied the soap and sugar mix.

so think these fibres are actually paint rolls? if that makes sense?

Ive left the bonnet to dry over night before scourering it again then gonna try another coat of primer.

You guys got any ideas? u think the soap and sugar mix has caused a reaction? (thought that is what its meant for)

Do you think i need to take it back and start again?

thanks martin

Shropshire.

Not sure what you have used to clean the dust from the paint but I thought sugar soap was for cleaning walls in house before paint!?!

You should use panel wipe and a tack cloth, I would rub it back, start again but this time use the correct automotive products.

As above!! you need to rub down the surface to be primed with 400 wet & Dry - then if you don't have any panel wipe, use thinners (the same as you're using in the paint of course, so if cellulose then cellulose thinners, if 2k then 2k thinners) to wash the surface prior to priming...

Your method is your problem, dont use sugar soap, dont use a scourer.
Only use lint free cloth and degreaser to clean the panel. A tack cloth is only used (dry) to clean off dust

I seriously doubt it!

Phil has pretty much covered what I was going to say. Where did you get the sugar soap being fine for a car idea??

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

flat the bonnet with P600 wet and dry and place a teaspoon of washing up liquid in the water to kill off any grease on the panel.......... then use a tack cloth available from any good paint shops

Just out of curiosity you say you agree with phil, but where does your knowledge come from? just u only seem to be early twenties and by your build thread looks like all your work has been done by other people (INCLUDING THE SPRAYING OF YOUR CAR), so i dont seem to see where your experience or knowledge comes from, other than copying what others write!! Im happy to be proven wrong!!

And the only reason I ask is because your comment below seems to be more sarcastic then an actual question!!

Martin,
The first car i sprayed was my mini, around 5 years ago. I researched how much it would have cost to get mine done professionally and didn't want to pay that!!
I bought a cheap(ish) gun for around £40, a book called "How to spray classic cars" and the materials. I didn't even practice on any scrap, just set everything up and went to it!!
Since then, all the knowledge i have has been from practice. I have sprayed the mini (in it's entirety) again, as i removed the bodykit and changed the roof and have done (in no particular order) my impreza, my jeep, my old girls Morris Minor, a HGV for my work, a Skoda Fabia, a friends impreza, a fiat 500, a friends fiesta etc etc. I have numerous pictures of all of these jobs and to be honest i like to think i know what i'm talking about when it comes to painting cars!!!
If you would like to see any pictures or have any questions then please feel free to ask, i can easily pop them here or email them to you.
For the record i'm 30 and as i mentioned have experience as my knowledge; over the years i've mucked up jobs or had problems too - but that's how you learn!!!
I've always been one for "having a go" so fair play for that - as i said you learn by your mistakes, so don't take anything personally mate.
