anyone know how to test the crank trigger wheel pick up sensor for serviceability? think that might be the reason mine might not be starting.

Plug in laptop, crank engine, see if it reads rpm - should be 200-300.

it doesnt read any rpm when cranking. i am getting a spark on all 4 plugs but no matter what angle i set the static timing to, it wont fire

No crank sensor = no spark.

yeah what Tom said,

I'd guess that the crank sensor is getting to the dis ok, but the dis signal in not getting to the MJ

you would get a spark with no crank sensor, the edis would take over and run it at 9 degrees advance in limp home mode

Sorry Andy but you are wrong buddy. If the crank sensor isn't working the EDIS module does not know the engine is cranking or running, thus will sit there and do nothing.

Agreed. How could it spark at 9 degrees without a crank sensor. 9 degrees of what?

What else have you checked? Are the plug leads on the correct plugs? If they weren't then no matter what crank angle you put it won't go.

I'm thinking of when the edis looses contact with the MJ... too much beer last night..

Australia oi oi oi!

i would say you sensor is gone, maybe cut the wire & test you are getting power down into the sensor.

would either be the edis or the sensor surely.

why don't you unplug the mega jolt and see if it starts.

i had the same problem, i was getting spark i checked all 4 plugs were right.

turns out the sensor is dead, might have to do with me grinding it lol.. another story.

other wise you may have the trigger wheel wrong.

i did it with the kit & had it 180 degrees out.

well, the leads can only go on 2 ways as its the wasted spark. tried swapping them over and over and over.. i have a canems set up fitted so the trigger wheel shouldnt matter. set up to #1 tdc and looked where the missing tooth was in relation to the sensor. 7 teeth after the missing tooth. set the canems to that on the laptop and tried it. nothing. then went round the whole 360 on the trigger wheel on the laptop, still nothing. it was running on a mj before i went to the canems and i havent adjusted the trigger wheel.

Someone else has been having problems with trigger setting in canems recently

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=432108

You might find some hints in there.

But it doesn't make sense that you get physical sparks yet your laptop says the engine isn't cranking.

Does canems have a tooth logger like MS ?

This won't work as the sensor is a variable reluctance sensor and effectively generates its own signal. The only real was to test the sensor and EDIS is replace them with known good ones. Atleast this is the only way I have ever got results without scratching my head too much.

You can test them if you have a sensitive multimeter set to AC volts. You see a small AC voltage from the sensor if you crank the engine that has a trigger wheel on with the sensor looking at it.
