Just grenaded my mpi cooper engine however the block is actually still in reasonable condition (i.e. it will be fine with a +20 rebore). I dont really want to put a 1293 mpi engine back in my cooper (I will just get a new one from somewhere).

If I decided to turbo the mpi block rather than rebuild the turbo engine I have sitting on the garage floor, Any ideas if I will have issues with emissions due to it being a modern a+ engine in a 1973 car? Also would there be any extra benifits in using an MPI block?

The emissions test follows the engine not the car...

so long as you can prove its an old engine and the MOT tester agrees... you can have the test applicable to the ages of the engine!

so If i put a mpi engine in a 1973 car then i have to have a cat and get it though what a 1998 car has to comply with then I have no hope. Bugger. So ive now got a 1275 paper weight. :(

If you decide to turbo the MPi block the main issue will be lack of distributor hole and drive, so you will have to run mapped ignition. As a plus point though, you will have the mountings for the smaller higher mounted alternator, so will be able to use the MPi front mounted radiator.

Aren't these monts on the head, and not the block??? If so, you'd have to get a Mpi head to modify as well.

The block might be different as well, But the main alternator mounts are on the head :)

Nothing is like a good mount on the head.

evolution is correct the emissions go on which ever is the older, but you will probably have to prove that the engine is older, and also show the MOT tester where in the rule book it says you can! (copy on line somewhere!!!)
