My concrete floor for the conservatory has been done wrong again, its 5-10mm too high.
Does anyone know if a 3m x 4m concrete slab can be ground down in any way?

I seriously doubt it!

Yep you can hire concrete grinders/scrabblers from most good hire shops-tend to be the larger outfits that do small plant and the like, the grinders i have used are like a floor polisher with abrasive blocks underneath fine finish but slow, never used a scrabbler type machine but these i think are quicker but rougher.

Sounds like a scrabbler might be just the ticket, doesnt matter if its rough as underfloor heating is going ontop of it

I seriously doubt it!

Only ever used them for suface prep so not sure about skimming off 10mm or so, speak the hire people and they should be able to reccomend something, we use A plant for stuff like that, but again loads of hire places, a diamond cup wheel for an angle grinder is good for egdes and corners-best of luck with it, sounds like they forgot to allow for u/f and floor covering?

Thats what I was meaning though. All that concrete ends up as a fluid you are working in and around. Its similar to working with wet concrete without its ability to set and go hard.

I have helped a friend grind a large floor area in a skatepark, but it was ony to smooth the surface off, not 10mm or so. It took several hours. It's doable, but I don't envey you.

Is there no way to accomodate the 10mm? I assume that is the extra 'hight' required for the UFH that the builders never accounted for when the concrete was layed? Bastards!

Fortunately it wont be me sorting it.

I spoke at length with the boss about the depth of the UFH the night before they poured the concrete as there is a minimum depth of insulation and a minimum depth of screed and they still got it wrong, Id rather it was too deep if anything as I could pack it up with more insulation but Im fooked now.

Adding to this they should have finished the job 3 weeks ago but I havent even seen any of them in 2 weeks and theres still a solid weeks work to finish after they sort the floor

I seriously doubt it!

Paul, youre best off taking the surface up with a small concrete breaker by chipping across it, never done any good with anything else, its just ballache, then fill any deep holes with a small amount of concrete and once youre happy with the level, build it back up to something like with self levelling compound. If they did the concrete to the correct height, if anything it should be a few mm low, concrete shrinks as it sets and dries. Hope thats of use to you chap. Any deep areas you need to self level, mix the levelling compound with a small bag of plastering sand to bulk it out.

No mate, they gave my money back and let me keep the £13,000 conservatory. This is another company who are an established building company who gave all the promises to put it right within 2 weeks, which I thought was a tall order - I expected 3 weeks, but its been 5 weeks now and all theyve done is dig out the old foundation, dug and poured a 1m deep x 600mm wide foundation for us and built the walls.

I seriously doubt it!

I am expecting them to sort it, Im just looking at what options there are other than smashing it out and risking damage to the foundation and brick walls

I seriously doubt it!

Could always run one of those disk cutters with the ability to set the depth all over the floor, then kango out the chunks. Is it being screeded or tiled straight on top of the concrete?

does the insulation sit on the conc then the ufh on top of the insulation then screed?
if so would you not be better off taking 10mm or so off the insulation?

That would be the easy way but then Im paying to heat up the concrete slab instead of the room. Being detatched it costs enough to heat this place anyway without wasting it
