hi

i've been doing some work on one of my other project cars recently (hillman imp) and on saturday i resprayed the engine bay in ford diamond white paint that i got from halfords. this all went fine untill last night i accidentally splashed some petrol on it and it pretty much dissolved the the paint instantly and has ruined the area, which i now have to rub back and respray again.

as someone who hasn't done much spraying in the past, my question is, is this normal??

when i spilt petrol on the daily in th past it wipes off without so much as a mark on the paint if done quickly.

is it because its newly painted ? it had 2 full days of drying time and i hadnt got a round to polishing it up yet would this have made any difference?

any advice would be welcome as i beinging to think that if my paint is going to fall off every time it get some petrol splashed on it there is very little point in me making it look good at all.

cheers luke

Those cans are probably filled with Cellulose which is notorious for reacting with other chemicals

All paints do not completely harden for weeks, which leaves it open to attack from chemicals (2 Pack will be better as it dries chemically not by thinner evaporation as with Celly)

I've even seen a car spayed in Celly got rained on after a couple of days and it ended up covered in little dimples from the rain drops

Sadly Halfords spray top coat is utter crap, to add insult to injury it isn't even cheap!

To do a good job try a proper paint factor who can mix you custom aerosols with some decent gear in.

The best stuff is 2 pack but you need an air fed mask etc to use it as its bad for you.

You can get disposable masks suitable for 2 pack now, but they are quite pricey for something you chuck away.

Most Carbon filter/Organic vapour respirators designed for spraying paint will be suitable to a certain extent for 2k. Whilst wearing the mask in an environment that includes super small airborne particles of paint and thinners, you want the mask to filter these so that you are not inhaling the miscroscopic particles of paint itself.

The thing with 2k is that it contains isocyanates - the bad vapours are not whilst you are spraying, it's whilst it's drying that they are released - no matter who claims to have invented a disposable mask to filter these vapours there is no way i'd chance using it for prolonged periods inside a closed room........!!!

Back on topic, i'd chance that the paint is just shit, as has been said. A decent 2k or even cellulose should not remain wet or be damaged by petrol after it has dried, the paint must be crap or maybe not mixed properly.

Get some decent stuff; if it's just touching up or a small panel then buy a half decent carbon respirator and do it outside on a super hot day, i'm sure you'll be fine.....!!
