i pretty much live 5mins away from the sea and think it's time i made the most of it and it'll be a good way of keeping fit, so iwant to start kayaking but have no idea where to start!

i do know that i want an open/sit on kayak, and i want to spend £150-200 maximum if possible

so does anyone have any advice for starting out? or any recommendations on kayaks? [brands, sizes etc]

thanks! :)

Oh your poor shell! No advice on kayaking im afraid. Although i think id go for a longer one if your going to be kayaking in the sea, as this may help stop you going round in circles!*happy*

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Jersey, Channel Islands

I am on the lifeboat crew in Jersey and as a matter of coincidence, we were called out to a kayaker last night who tried going further than he thought.

If you are seriously considering this, I would go for a tested at one of your local water sports centres and see what you think.

The main reason we get called out for kayakers is either people not knowing where the strong tides are (more of a problem in Jersey as the tide rises and falls by around 8 meters per day and sometimes up to 12 meters), not knowing what the forecast is and not being properly prepared for the conditions.

One that I remember is a group of kayakers going out on the longest day to watch the sunrise and started suffering from hypothermia. They assumed that the longest day should be warm!

Another time was when a group of young kids went out and didn’t know that the weather was getting worse.

These are only the down sides and every day in the summer, I see groups going out, enjoying themselves without any problems.

We were training a few years ago to do a rowing race of about 20 miles over open sea and there was nothing better than going out on a calm evening in the summer, for a row around the coast whilst forgetting about the stressful day you had.

Speed doesn't kill, suddenly becoming stationary, now that's what'll get ya!

thats good thinking eddie, i know theres somewhere local which does a training course... would make sense to try it out first!
i'll only be going around the coast, i won't venture out too far and maybe the odd river. Been looking at a few on ebay, any opinions on what would be best for a beginner?
