I've searched and read lots on engine breathers, and can't find a satisfactory answer to explain the need for a rocker cover breather. I'm quite happy to spend the 10min it requires to fit one but was curious for a technical answer for it's need.

Can someone tell me why is it that the rocker cover would require it's own breather rather than gasses finding their way via the crankcase to the one on the transfer case?

the transfer case breather can be quite oily because of the gears throwing the oil about, I pipe my transfer case (and any other breathers) into the rocker cover and use it as a kind of pre catch tank, then just run one big pipe ito a catch tank.
