Good evening,

This is going to be a bit ramblely but I have questions of the strange variety so it will work out.

A which back I picked up a car mag and in it was an advert for centrifugal superchargers, after a bit of research I could see they are basically belt driven turbos. All the turbo use with none of the fancy exhaust manifold and I wondered why I'd not seen these used in cars.

Then I saw the price of £1100 a unit and figured it out.

So, I had a little thing and I've taken A turbo apart before. The majority of the compressor side is all one part, then you have the part that goes to the exhaust.

So, I had a think about if I could theoretically graft half a turbo onto a alternator style set-up (my thinking is alternators don't need oiling so gluing half a turbo one shouldn't do in what bearings are there).

But I have no idea what RPM a turbo needs to work at to run properly / get a good level of boost, say from a T3 metro turbo. From that I could mess about with pulley sizes till something worked.

But does anyone think its possible or is this just the fevered late night thoughts of a mad man. I know ANYTHING is possible with a machine shop and a small van of money but lets say I got a lathe and a few bits of stock with which to work with an time, plenty of time.

Anyway, where was I going with this ... yes, right, RPM turbo spindle spins to get power.

Thanks for any information entertaining the though of my late night ramblings.

think 80,000 up to 180,000rpm, so it you want boost at 2500rpm you will need a fuckin big wheel driving a very small one.

Forger pullies ones i stripped on the past had a radial gearbox (maybe wrong word) with at a guess 100:1ratio or more
if you look at a compressor map the turbine speed is sometimes on there

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

They have been fitted to plenty of cars, not so many minis though. Do a search for Rotrex on here and all will be revealed.

Ah, that explains what all the gubbins is inside of the exploded diagrams I've seen.

Hmmmm.

Oh well, its an idea to muse and think about.

@Ben H, I don't really want to buy one, due the prices I've seen them for new. Don't seem the sort of thing to turn up cheap on eBay either.

Oh well, cheers anyway chaps. I'll just keep the idea working away at the back of my mind. Maybe I'll find some gears or something I can use one day and build some horrible amalgamation of gears, turbo bits and metal.

Luckilly most cars haves suitably big wheel fitted as standard called the fly :)

Not sure how many teeth on a mini flywheel, maybe 100? so 2500 engine speed to generate 80000rpm spindle speed means that would be turning a 3 toothed cog which don't work too well. Anyway, like Brett said some weird boxes of multicog witchcraft are available to those with unlimited budgets.

I'm not suggesting it is impossible to do, just a difficult and expensive mechanical piss around for no real benefit. Isn't it just easier to make an exhaust manifold for the turbo.. or buy a supercharger

I am not suggesting you buy one. It is just a thread that discusses the pros and cons of this type of device. DO the search if you haven't.

i recall a mini years ago with the guts of a truck turbo driven by a belt around the flywheel and around a wheel where the turbine used to be.. anyone else remember this? was some discussion on here at the time.

turbo 16v k-series 11.9@118.9 :)

Looking at the belt drive in that article, I'd have to say there isnt a hope in hell it would ever work. Load of balls.

The belt would slip like fuck, and if it was a toothed belt, there might be 2 teeth engaged on the blower, which might last 10 seconds.
In fact, I'm nearly going to call balls, because I cant see any possible way that the larger pulley could even turn. It almost looks like it's bolted there just for show.

Centrifugal blowers are actually very good, but they arent so common simply because they are bloody expensive.
In many ways one on a Mini would be great. It could make a lot of power, without the gearbox and clutch killing torque that a turbocharged setup might make.

But a good belt drive is critical, mounting brackets are critical, and basically the installation requires a lot more thought and effort than a simple turbo install. And ultimately, a turbo setup will always make more power, or have the ability to.

I do like the idea of this type of charger and I would fit one over a traditional charger every time. Unless I wanted a persistent whine and proper all rpm torque.

I still favour a turbo though. Just for simplicity, efficiency and power.
