I had wanted a 4 pin diff from minispares - but they have not had any in stock for the best part of 2 months now and dont seem to know when they will be coming in, so I took it apon myself to pull apart and rebuild my old unit, then maybe to purchase one in a few months time (when money funds increase *oh well*)

It wasnt hard at all, however I was shocked at what I found. Considering this is my "good" diff with no noticeable play, the other one I have has so much play in it.

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/index.php?p=folder&id=90

I have ordered new planet wheels, new fibre washers, new tagged washers for the planets, uprated diff pin and some new lock tags...

I'll upload the rebuilt pics when I get the parts.

I urge you to check your diffs if you have the chance, you too may be suprised what you find.

Dan

Before bolting on the turbo i had about 110bhp in the 1380 and that used to wear a diff pin pretty badly after about 8,000 miles. Thank god for the x pin!!

I got 2 X pin diffs from MOSS yesterday, and i know another person picked one up from them aswell. might be worth giving them a ring to see if they've got anymore in stock in any of their branches.

how much was the X-pin from moss? i have orderd my diff rebuild bits from there (tho now i see i have forgotten bits*tongue*) it might be worth me spending the little extra after all tho the diff bits are verry cheep imo.

the one i got is ?139 from MOSS, it's a copy of the minispares one. got it in the post today, just had a look at it and it looks as though the gears are offset so i'm a happy camper!

I plan to stick with the competition pin for the time being, I go fairly easy on my car anyway. Its not a full out race car by any stretch of the imagination. The only miles the car really does are longish drives from MK to Cov (if its working that is...)

Maybe in 5k miles time ill check it again and if my next lot of student loan has come in maybe a 4 Pinion diff!

With a properly rebuilt standard type diff with a decent pin you might be suprised how well it will wear, especially if you are considerate with it regarding emergency starts and cornering with the inside wheel spinning up.......mechanical sympathy can go a long way towards a cross pin diff if you get what I mean!

Bear in mind that the ones that usually break do so after many miles and lots of abuse.

"uprated diff pin " are NOT worth a _ank! they still wear.

Heard many people say the competition pins are no better (or worse) than a genuine rover pin!!!!! Cant comment myself as ive only used genuine rover and minispares x pins.

I think that the reason why people say that the uprated pins aren't better than the original ones is because they don't change the planet gears. When a worn planet gear is fitted on a new pin, it'll wear out the new diff pin in double fast time.

I'm building a 1191 10000rpm engine now which is only fitted with a single diff pin. This will be used on track. We'll see....
